Here are my impressions of the Makita BO6040 Dual Mode Polisher.
In the rotary mode, at the highest speed setting, the RPM's are around 1000 which are not quite fast enough to make the polishing action easy to control. I found the polisher trying to walk around on the finish and it made it difficult to move the tool in even patterns.
The orbital mode has much more power than the G-100 Dual Action Polisher. This gives it better cleaning power, but the flip-side of that coin is the user is more likely to mar or haze the finish depending on the pad and the chemical they are using to the point that they cannot recover without re-polishing the area with a true rotary buffer. Thus it defeats the purpose of using it to remove defects.
My first test of this tool was on a single-stage black show truck and after testing it for around 30 minutes on the drivers-side hood, I put it away and returned to the Makita rotary buffer for removing swirls and scratches followed by the G-100 for final polishing and then applied two thin coats of NXT back to back.
The Maktia BO6040 looks like a good idea, but at this time I don't think I would recommend it to a someone just starting out and learning to machine clean and polish paint.
