  • Glass cleaning problem.

I recently bought a 2010 Volvo S40, it appears the glass is treated to repel dirt and water.
When cleaning the glass i use Meguiars nxt generation glass cleaner and a microfibre, it's worked great on previous cars.
The problem i now face is the microfibre seems to drag and leaves fibres behind.
Any suggestions for other cloths i could use ?

Sounds like you have surface contaminants on your window, try claying it with the fine clay from the smooth surface clay kit.

No contaminants, it has a water repellent coating on the glass.

That seams like it could be the problem then!

          Re: Glass cleaning problem.

In your first post you stated it seemed to have a coating, then in your second you said it did. Which is it?

I know on new glass, any type of towel will drag. I just had a new windshield installed and could hardly get the towel to slide across the glass no matter how much window cleaner I sprayed on it. Being a new windshield, there was no water repelling coating on it.

I think your problem is due to it being new glass. I put a coat of Rain X on mine and I have no problems with the towel dragging anymore.

Clay the windshield for good measure, and then substitute the mf for a plush lint free cotton towel. You should get clear streak free results. Don't let the drag bother you too much.

              Thanks for the tips.

@cnfowler thanks, it didn't occur to me to use rainx.

@Erik Mejia I'll be popping out later to find a decent lint free cloth.

The drag itself is a symptom more than a problem. It's the small fibres that are annoying, especially on the windscreen.

Try washing your windows with ONR. I found it left no residue and dried quickly. My windows had never been cleaner -on a 2001 Volvo.

worth a try but older volvos don't have the coating. i'll try anything, i really can't stand dirty windows.
my last car was a 1999 S40 and i had no problems.

                    Re: Glass cleaning problem.

                    Problem solved.
Yesterday was our 1st hot day for about 8 months, we were out for a drive and the screen got covered in dead bugs. 1st chance i got i stopped for a coffee and went to clean the screen.
Having just given the car it's monthly full clean and washing all my microfibres all i had in the boot was a pack of shiny new meguiars even coat microfibre applicator pads so i used one of them.
Worked a treat, no more dragging and no more annoying fibres.

                    Thanks for everyones advice.
