  • Detailing exterior black trim

What do you use on exterior black trim that makes it look new but will not cause it to fade? I have used several products in the past on new vehicles but all have caused fading.

None of the Meguiars dressings will cause the surface to fade. They are designed to preserve the surface from UV exposure and such.

    Supreme Shine-Water based
    Natural Shine-Water based
    Hyper-Dressing-Water based (can be diluted)
M40 Vinyl and Rubber Cleaner/Conditioner-Water based
    All-Season Dressing-Solvent based
    Gold Class Trim Detailer-Water based
Ultimate Protectant-Water based (new technology allows this dressing to bond to the trim increasing typical water-based dressing longevity dramatically)

All of these dressings are popular and will definitely protect your trim. If you are looking for longevity then I recommend All-Season Dressing as it is a solvent based dressing, not a water based dressing, and will not run in the rain. None of these will fade your trim.

#40 and ASD for quicker applications.

UP takes a little time but is still a great product.

Its tough to bring back the shine of black exterior trim once it starts to fade. The oils are out of the vinyl/plastic from the environment, mostly from UV damage.

Personally I like a Petroleum/Solvent based dressing to dry and revitalize the trim as much as possible. I'm not a fan of water based anything, even though water based products are better for the long term life of the trim. I would prefer to treat the trim and keep it as black as possible until it cracks and then replace it, rather than use water based dressing that don't add much sheen back into the trim.
