  • Help! Ultimate compound + g110v2 not getting all the scratches

    Here is the deal.
I have Meguiars Ultimate Compound that I've put on the polishing yellow pad W8207.

    Here is the before:

    And after a "few" passes.

It looks like the swirls, got removed but these sort of scratches are still here no matter what I tried. I got a feeling I need M105 or M95 to correct this, but all the PBE stores around me are closed. Will check again tomorrow, if not im finishing it off as much as i can with UC

Speed is 5 on the g110v2

    Any ideas?

How are you working the UC?

Set it on speed 6 and move the polisher slow and steady at about 1/2 inch per second over the work area. Work in 2' by 2' sections go over the area several times. After each a couple of passes, inspect your work. If the're still not coming out, try again applying a little more pressure. When pad stops spinning, you're applying too much pressure.

Put a black mark on the backing plate to see how much pressure you're applying.

Ya I got the same problem bro, not sure if I got sucked in into all the hype but I'm doing as what people have told me, tutorial videos, everything I read online, and I still have scratches even after using M105 when first applying UC, scratches still remains.

What are you working on, any pics?
I can appreciate your frustration, if you are not getting the result you want but perhaps we can investigate this a little further and get them scratches out.

I just worked with M105 and a polishing pad on my girlfriends Chrysler Crossfire. This car has some of the hardest paint on the planet and I was able to make progress with this combo. It probably would have need 5-6 passes to totally eliminate the scratches, but that wasn't my goal.

I used Ultimate Compound on my 2009 GMC sierra which has much softer paint, I was able to remove 100% of the scratches/swirls in about 3 passes.

I've put on some hard pressure at some points, the body panel started flexing and not much improvement. I'm putting on uc in a x shape, not too much not too little. speed 5 and i put pressure and go up and down, side to side slowly, overlapping.

Would m105 be more aggressive & hence get rid of the rest?

I have used m105 with yellow pad on my PC and some of the deeper scratches on my 94 vette remain despite numerous passes on speed 6. I'm thinking about going to the 7006 cutting pad, doesn't seem like there's another option.

I picked up some m105 from someone in a sampler bottle and went over the hood and other parts using speed 4,5 and eventually 6 since it wasnt getting as much as i thought it should.

Car in question is a 2006 audi a4 brilliant black
I honestly dont think the car has ever seen a detailing job.

It seems as if many of the scratches still remain. I've put on some pretty sure on the pad and I'm sure its enough as the body panels flexed at some points. I'm not applying too much of the product either.

What i did notice after reading some more on here I could clean my pad more often, i threw it to the wash last night and will be tackling the hood once again today.

I alsow washed all my walmart microfiber towels, I have a pretty bad feeling those are scratching instead of just taking the excess product off

                  Any ideas?

Just to add since i can't edit.
I've been doing some reading on the W7207 pad which seems like it might actually help out in these scratches combined with UC as a test and then m105 if needed.

If you are not sure about the towels, you will want to really focus on an area, and wipe with them, and see if any scratches/swirls move around, or are added.

It could possibly be time to try a cutting pad on a test spot, but I am sure one of the Mikes or Brian will chime in, since they have been away for the holiday.

Re: Help! Ultimate compound + g110v2 not getting all the scratches

Some Audis have been known to possess really difficult to correct (ie "hard") paint that requires either some patience or a more aggressive approach. Patience would include doing several slow passes with Ultimate Compound until you reach the desired result (although some of the scratches shown in your photos look pretty severe, in all honesty). A more aggressive approach will likely mean M105, but even then you may need a few passes if the paint is seriously uncooperative.

There is at least one image that shows a series of fairly straight, closely grouped scratches. Any chance these were caused by your towels? Are you able to discern if such scratches existed before buffing?

Another thing to think about, even though it sounds counterintuitive here, is to take a less aggressive approach and see how that works out. Some paint systems will actually respond better to a less aggressive process and since a test spot is quick and easy to do, give that a shot. Experimentation is the name of the game as you just never know how a paint will respond to a given input. For a less aggressive approach try easing up on the pressure with the tool still at speed 5 and continue to work the same size area, but work it for a bit longer.

Re: Help! Ultimate compound + g110v2 not getting all the scratches

I ended up using a combination of both UC and m105, switching between a polishing pad, and a "cutting" pad i think it was that I got from someone. Results are much better. I applied two coats of polish, and two coats of wax, and called it a day this time around. I'll need to better prepare myself the next time i do a major detail.

It seems as if my towels are not the best ones to use for detailing. When taking off the wax the first time around i noticed that there have been some scratches that showed up which previously werent there. Time to invest in mf towels.

Always test your microfibers on the surface of a clean, blank cd to see if the towel will scratch it. If it does, don't use it on your paint.
