  • New DA G110v2 user, now what?

So, after more than 2 years of pondering the idea/desire of buying a DA polisher, especially the Meguiar's one, I finally went ahead and just did! I received it this past Wednesday, brand new G110 v2 , and I'm more than eager to give it a try this weekend.

I'm not as car crazy as many of the people in this forum, but I do like to take care of my car (black Mazda 6 2007... black!) and I've been doing so by hand only for the last couple of years. Now, I'm afraid (and sad) to say, that my car has been neglected a little bit the winter here (Seattle) prevented me of taking care as the car deserves, besides the fact that I don't have a closed garage on my own, and that summer was late this year, AND, the cherry on the pie: my wife got rear ended pretty bad a couple of months ago, and car spent more than a month on the body shop.

Anyway, I want to fully detail my car, and correct most of the imperfections. Basically are light scratches (except for a big one on the rear-right side, that my wife did.... 3 days after we got the car back from the bodyshop)

But first, I have a few questions about the DA:
    - I installed the handle, and tighten up, but it still feels a little loose, not all wobbly, but it moves slightly with a little force... is that OK?? I don't want to over tighten because I'm afraid the metal screws can break the plastic. Any advices here?
    - What are the 'brushes' for? Little tiny 'spring-like' pieces that came as replacement in a little bag. How often should I replace those? Don't look like a brush to me at all =]
    - A technique question: you hold the DA from the handle with one hand, and is it safe to put the other hand anywhere in the body of the DA?
    - How many foam pads can you consume on a single pass of say:
    * Cleaning/polish compound (I'm planning scratch X, swirl X, and DC pure polish)
    * Wax (gold class, although, I only have paste, can I use a butter knife? Or should I just get the liquid one? I don't want to just buy another one until I finish the paste, and I really love how the car looks with GC.
    - What's the difference between the Soft Buff 6.5'' pads from the Soft Buff 2.0 pads? (besides the size of course, 2.0 are 7'') are the 6.5'' machine washable? I bought, by mistake, the 6.5 ones (3 polishing, 2 finishing)... already looking at ADS for the six pack for next purchase.
    - Is it ok to store the DA with the backing plate installed? I mean, the easiest way is to put the DA inside the bag (which by the way, is an awesome canvas bag!! Thanks Megs!!!) with the backing plate facing down, hence the weight of the DA will fall over the plate, and it's plastic, and the DA is not very light.

I will have so many more questions in the next couple of days, and (hopefully) tomorrow I can start bringing my car back to life!
I also decided to buy the DA, because I've heard it really saves you time, and your arms will thank you. So, as much as I love detailing my car, I also love spending time with my wife, I hope buy going this route I can fulfill both! =]

    Thanks a lot!!

Apologies for the little delay in getting to your post here, but let's see if we can answer your questions......

Go ahead and torque them down tightly, you should be just fine.

Brushes are a wear item in electric motors, sort of like the brake pads on your car (although they perform a very different task, of course). When your brake pads are totally shot your car won't stop. When the carbon brushes are worn out the tool won't go. You should be able to get 400+ hours out of a set of brushes.....get to work!

Essentially, yes. Just make sure you apply your pressure with the hand on the handle directly over the pad, and just guide the tool with your other hand. Most people end up holding the tool closer to the base, down near the cord. But whatever is comfortable for you is best.

When buffing out an entire car you want to clean the polishing pads regularly, like after every panel. Cleaning on the fly is simply a matter of pressing a terry cloth towel against the pad and holding it there firmly while turning the tool on for a few seconds. This forces excess product out of the pad and into the towel. Still, swapping to a fresh pad at least once when buffing out an entire car is a good idea. In fact, swapping out polishing pads 3 or 4 times isn't a bad idea either. Your finishing pad for wax application doesn't need to be cleaned on the fly (at least it shouldn't, unless you are waaaay over using the wax) and a single pad should easily suffice even when waxing a full sized SUV.

The major difference is that the Soft Buff 2.0 pads can be machine washed and dried whereas we do not recommend doing so with the 6.5" pads. The foam construction on the W8xxx yellow polishing pads is identical between the two series. The finish pad is obviously black in the 2.0 series and tan in the 6.5" versions, but the foam is also different. When used on a D/A the difference isn't very noticeable, but on a rotary the black pad cures a sometime skipping issue.

Sure you can. But you might want to place the tool in the bag handle side down and backing plate up. The bag will still close fully with the plate toward the top, and the tool won't be putting weight on one edge and bending it over.
