  • Clay, Pads, Swirls and Wax

Going to Clay the hood of the car this afternoon, than apply the Meguiar's Swirl Remover with my Meguiar's buffer. Hopefully that will give me the desired results, then I can apply paste wax. I've been using Collinite's Marque D'Elegance; can you compare that to the Mequiar's waxes? Not overly impressed with NXT. I used to use your premium liquid, but it has been discontinued.
Question: Can I apply the swirl remover on the yellow pad and remove it with the light tan finishing pad? I see that you now have a Black Finishing pad. Is there a difference?

    Thanks,

    Jim

Re: Clay, Pads, Swirls and Wax

Hi Jim, apologizes for missing this thread originally.

If by "Meguiar's Swirl Remover" you mean M09 Swirl Remover 2.0 from the pro line or SwirlX from the consumer line, then you're dealing with pretty mild products. Depending on the severity of the defects you're looking to address they may not be strong enough for the task at hand. That's going to be up to you to determine.

It sounds like you used to use our Medallion wax in the past, which has indeed been discontinued. If you want a nice carnauba in liquid form we would suggest M26 High Tech Yellow Wax. Having not used the Collinite product you mentioned we can't directly comment on how the two compare, but M26 has been a hugely popular wax among hard core enthusiasts for 20 years or more.

Now, about those pads. You would use the yellow polishing pad to apply any liquid paint cleaner such as the two mentioned above, but you wipe off the residue with a clean microfiber towel, not a bare finishing pad. Pads are for applying product and, where applicable, working that product against the paint with some energy so as to remove defects. That's the case with a polishing pad and a paint cleaner. A finishing pad would be used at slower speeds to apply your pure polish/glaze or your wax. Again, final removal is done with a microfiber towel.

The difference between the tan finishing pad and our new black finishing pad are most noticeable when using a rotary buffer. The change in foam material addresses a sometime skipping issue that happened on a rotary under certain conditions but was a non issue with a D/A. Of course, the new black pad is part of the Soft Buff 2.0 series so it is fully machine washable.

Thanks, I think I've got it down.
I did apply the M26 and am quite pleased.
