  • Hazed & Cloudy - Too much product on car?

Hey guys, would appreciate some opinions on an issue Im currently having.

This is on my 87 Buick Grand National that sits in the garage, never sees rain, etc. My usual routine is to take the car out of the garage, dust it off, use some quick detailer, and then the same when I put it away. About once every couple of months Ill put a coat of 26 on it just for kicks. Car was repainted about 5 years ago, and paint was fully corrected about 5 months ago.

My problem is, lately there seems to be left over product or something that is causing the paint to haze & cloud up no matter how many times I wipe it down. Its the strangest thing, is this from NEVER washing the car and just using quick detailer and wax all of the time? I've never noticed this before, its just been happening recently.

    Any opinions are appreciated.

I've had the same thing happen to me before too and I'd have to agree it's just too much product. I ended up just washing my car more frequently between the quick detailer wipe downs.

Another possible option would be to use a water based QD like Last Touch and just mix it a little weaker. That seemed to help for me.

Climate could be a factor too though.

If a good wash doesn't clear up the haze, you might then try applying a coat of Cleaner Wax. That should clean up the paint, and then you can go back to to your M26 and regular quick detailing wipe-downs.

Im guessing your cars painted black right?

Its not a single stage job is it?

(Reason I ask about single stage is I had an 84 olds painted single stage and it would get wax build up/haze the same as yours)

Try a small test spot of Cleaner/Wax like stated up top, that fixed things for me back

Thanks for the input guys, Im pretty sure a wash would clear it up as well, I just didnt really want to wash the car! haha I have been using Final Inspection and Last Touch as quick detailers, maybe Ill try to dilute the Last Touch and see if that helps. I just dont think theres any reason to wash the thing when it never gets dirty.

Didnt even see your reply at first....no, the car is not single stage. However, it was from the factory and it used to haze up all the time.

I hear you on that one. I did the exact same thing as you when I had my Monte SS. Quick wipe down before I left and another when I got home. Started putting a cover on it too which eliminated the need for the wipe down prior to taking it out.

It definitely seemed that after about the 3rd time of QDing it that it started to get smeary and I ended up having to wash it.

Any pics of the GN? Love those cars!

Here is my old Monte SS (scanned in pics). Ground up resto with my old man, ZZ3 350/TPI unit. (Pictured in Car Craft Dec '98)

Looks like thats my problem then....oh well I guess it wont rust away from just a wash

That Monte is killer!! Huge G-body fan here. I currently have and GN and an 87-type and have a had a couple late 80's 442. Never a monte though, they always seem to be beat to hell by teenagers

Here are a couple pics of my GN:

Nevermind...looks like I cant post attachments for some reason (low post count maybe)

Bummer....better get that post count up!

Yeah, it is hard to find nice ones these days and those that are nice are low mileage garage queens asking big $$$. I got lucky and found my Monte which was owned by some older lady out of state. No rust and all original body. Never should have sold it!

Definitely should have held on to her...some of the best looking cars of any decade, not just the 80's

Ill post some pics when I get some more posts up.

Re: Hazed & Cloudy - Too much product on car?

Hey guys, well I broke down on Saturday and washed the car for a show in the afternoon. Washed the car with Meg's 00 High Tech (didnt clay-bar, car didnt need it), then used my DA to apply a nice thin coat of #26. Let it dry for about an hour and guess what? Haze was still there!!!! Not as bad as before, but definitely still there. Also noticed that for the first time, the #26 was a pain to remove, had to hit a couple of spots with Final Inspection just to get the residue off.

Question is, where do I go from here? This is really annoying, have never had this issue before. Im thinking about just polishing the car again with some 205 and a black pad and see if that gets me back to square one.

                      Any suggestions appreciated.

I just happened to read another post about someone having a similar situation after using #7. I used it a couple times earlier in the season (first year Ive ever used it), could the #7 be causing the "haze" on my paint? It looks like there is left over polish on the car at all times. Maybe #7 just doesnt react well with my paint.

As previously suggested, apply a coat of Cleaner Wax or ColorX. That will clean up all the wax and silicone residue and restore clarity to the paint. Then top it with your preferred wax. Polishing with 205 will also accomplish the job.
