  • Adding wax to wash solution, anyone tried this??

I read from another detailing website that some people add other brand's cleaner wax into their wash solution. I have never seen Meguiar's officially mention this... but have anyone on MOL tried this?

    1. What will happen if I add one oz of NXT2.0 liquid wax into a bucket of properly diluted Gold Class car wash solution?
    2. Will I lay down a smooth, shiny, thin coat of NXT2.0 on paint when I wash?
    3. Will the NXT wax content in car wash cause negative effects to cleaning ability of Gold Class?
    4. Will it cause swirls on paint when NXT bond onto the white MF wash mitts??

    Thanks in advance!

I haven't tried it, but I'm guessing it would leave a undesirable film similar to what happens when you fail to properly remove all the excess wax after waxing your vehicle.
If you are going to try it I would suggest much less than 1 oz. I'd strart with 1/4 oz.
If you want a wash product with wax built in, I would suggest Meguiar's Ultimate Wash and Wax. The formulation and testing has already been done for you.

All this being said, Ultimate Wash and Wax is intended to be used between waxings. It was never meant to be a replacement. Personally I recommend putting you effort towards properly waxing your vehicle.

Just go with the UWW. I have no official answer, however I really do not believe you would get the desired results.

I'm with you on this one. UQW is the way to go. ALTHOUGH, it would be counterproductive to mix a soap and wax w/o molecular bonding. If you're wanting to skip the cleanse(claying) and the correcting steps of the process, here's a trick. Wash and rinse your vehicle. While it's still wet, grab your UQW and do a once around spray down at belt high level (or right below the windows, whatever's higher.) Rinse again and dry off as usual.

Disclaimer: You'll get a great shine for around 2 weeks. This is a passive waxing application. I'd save that NXT 2.0 for a dedicated waxing step. It's just too dang good to dilute!

People like to experiment with detailing products all the time, and the results are usually mixed. Some things end up being incredibly effective at a task for which they were not designed, while others simply prove why they shouldn't be used a certain way.

            To answer your questions directly:

            1. You'll basically be throwing away one oz of NXT 2.0, that's all.
            2. Nope. NXT 2.0 and all the rest of our waxes are designed to be applied to clean, dry paint than allowed to haze/dry and be wiped off. Using it in soapy water will just cause it to be washed away. Besides, NXT 2.0 would have to be a fully water soluble product in order for it to fully and properly disperse through your wash bucket. And it isn't.
            3. Most likely not at all.
            4. Nope. And the NXT won't actually bond to your mitt anyway, it will just get washed away.

The chemistry behind UW&W is vastly different than merely adding a liquid wax to a soap. Most wash & wax products use a soluble wax that basically just gets washed away in the wash process. UW&W makes use of dispersed waxes that will, at least to some degree, actually stick around when used properly. Even then we don't consider it to be a substitute for a proper wax job.

I tried exactly the same thing last summer with bad results. NXT 2.0 mixed with hot water and Gold Class Soap.

I believe people from other forums suggesting adding cleaner wax into wash, is to mimic wash and wax products available on the market. Thank you for the informative reply. I believe I will better stick with the proper way of applying NXT wax, and stick with the correct information on MOL on how to properly use my Meguiar's products! I suppose I use roughly 1oz of NXT to wax a mid size sedan?

BTW you have mentioned "used properly" (highlighted in blue in the quotation above), may I ask what is the proper way of using UW&W? Are there some kind of secrets that make the wax bond better??

                  Thanks
Thanks Meguiar's, Thanks Michael, Thanks all members of MOL for creating an excellent environment for auto detailing knowledge sharing.

Re: Adding wax to wash solution, anyone tried this??

You'll obtain the maximum wax to the surface if you let the product dwell on the surface a bit longer and use only a light stream of water to rinse it, rather than blasting with the nozzle on the hose. Honestly, it's a fine distinction and we doubt you'll visually notice a huge difference (if any at all). Of course, in order to do this you must be working on a cool surface, in the shade, without there being much wind and not bone dry humidity - otherwise you've got potential issues of the soap drying on the surface.

Remember, we're using dispersed wax in this product instead of the soluble waxes used in almost all other wash & wax products. This actually allows some wax to be left behind on the paint, but certainly nowhere near enough to be considered a substitute for a proper wax job. Rather, it's a really good maintenance product for those times when all you want to do is wash and dry and maintain a very nice finish previously achieved.

Re: Adding wax to wash solution, anyone tried this??

I have tried using the UW&W once before.

However, I believe I made a mistake with the wash that time. I used a PVC towel made by Turt1e Wax to dry the car that time... The paint feel very dry and unconditioned after the wash, making me suspect that the PVC towel strips wax when I drag it across the paint... I will try the UW&W again with Meguiar's Water Magnet and Supreme Shine towels again in future. Thanks Michael!
