  • Help with another Lexus Please

    Hey Guys
I've got another Lexus to correct and this one is giving me a fit. I only THOUGHT the first Lexus I worked on was eaten up with swirls. This one I'm working on now isn't responding very well to UC , but thats probably because of my inexperience. I have a test spot thats a 2x2 and I have worked on this area with nothing but the UC. I haven't kept a clock on my time in this area but it seems like it should be showing a little more results by now. I'm using an orange pad (mid cut) and I'm wondering if I'm not giving enough downward pressure or what ever. I'm running my DA on 5. Somebody please give me a recipe in product and technique to get done with this one . This Lexus is the same champagne as the first one I corrected and I don't want get too aggressive if I don't need to .I can feel inexperience rearing its ugly head.

Do you have a mark on the back of your pad with a Sharpie?

As long as it is spinning consistently, you can add more pressure.

Apply enough pressure to stop the rotation, then back off a hair to get it to spin. Thoroughly work the product into the paint and wipe off at right before it dries. Have you moved the vehicle into the sun to check progress after wipeoff?

Try applying enough pressure to actually stop the pad from rotating, then ease up just enough to start the rotation again. Move the pad very slowly across the paint at the same time, giving the product more dwell time to do its thing.

But make sure that what you're seeing is a reduction in the amount of swirls that you started with and not just a trading of bad swirls for bad hazing of the finish. This can happen with more delicate paints and can drive a novice nuts. They see this less than perfect finish and think that they haven't corrected the defects when in fact all they're doing is swapping the old defect for a new one. But failing to realize that they just go more aggressive, which just makes things worse. And they go more aggressive still! Sometimes taking a more gentle approach is the faster way to a really clear finish.

But do the above technique adjustments with UC first since you've been using it and see where that gets you. But pay very close attention to the area you've worked compared to what you have not worked on. Is it improved in appearance or just changed?

Thanks everyone ...I'm not getting any hazing, its just not removing the swirls....I can see now its probably my technique,,,,,I've been a little afraid to pull the trigger on the DA.
