  • Products for drum finishes?

Noob here. I've seen alot of interesting comments about using car polishes/waxes on drums. I see Meguiar's is considered the best stuff to use, but wanted to ask a couple questions.

    1. Simple, standard nitrocellulose lacquer (Deft) on my current drums (10 coats), which have developed microscratches. Are there Meguiar's products which will work better on nitro than others to both remove scratches and to buff and protect the finish? Products to completely stay away from?

    2. Hand and/or DA Buffing. Any particular pads to do the job?

    Thanks for any help.

As luck would have it, we do have some products that work beautifully on this surface. We used to manufacture the products in the Fender Guitar kit and the same finish is commonly used on that instrument as you have on your drums - nitrocellulose lacquer.

M09 Swirl Remover 2.0 used by hand with a foam wax applicator pad does wonders for the fine scratches that accumulate over time, and M07 Show Car Glaze adds depth and gloss - again, apply with a separate foam wax applicator bad. Both products should be worked in small areas at a time and wiped off before they dry. Use a bit of elbow grease with the M09 as you're removing the scratches, but the M07 is a simple wipe on, wipe off process. Microfiber towels are highly recommended for wipe off.

Finally, for routine dusting of the surface use M34 Final Inspection and a clean microfiber.

All of these products are silicone free, body shop paintable products that won't cause any issues down the line for you, even with regular and frequent use.

      Great! Thanks for the reply.

Silly question. Are there 'grades' of microfiber cloth/towels, etc? I've never used them before. Same with foam pads. I assume some are rougher than others?

There are grades of microfiber really only in the same sense as there are different grades of cotton terry cloth - some are great, others are junk. Well, OK, so there are some microfibers designed specifically for use on glass, but they're usually clearly marked as such.

We'd recommend either our Supreme Shine microfibers or Ultimate Wipes, with the Ultimates being a top of the line premium towel. As for foam pads, we only sell one and it's the same one we package with many of our waxes.
