  • Scratches all over paint

    Hi All,

Did a full wax/polish etc a few months ago, car come up pretty well or so I thought.

Tonight I was in my garage under some new halogen lighting I have and the car is covered in scratches light, but they are all over the roof, and trunk etc. The car is white not noticeable really unless your under the lighting but they seem to be everywhere I look.

I have color x and ultimate compound, would the ultimate compound be too agressive, would swirl x be the better option, they are light but there is so many of them, my thought is that ultimate compound could be too harsh.

I will be working by hand also, any advice on how to tackle this problem would be appreciated, I figure its time for another detail. So I will wash first then clay, then attack these scratches.

    Any advice would be appreciated

    Thanks

    Clarky

If the scratches appear to follow where ever the light source is on the surface in a circular pattern then it would lead me to assume that you have swirl marks on your car. Being as they are very light I would suggest starting with color x before jumping to ultimate compound, you may also want to pick up swirl x before you attempt your correction for another option since swirlx offers more cut than colorx but less than UC. Start with a test spot on a nice flat panel under good lighting to see if your product choice is giving you the desired results before you move to the whole vehicle.

Get yourself some scratch-x. Then do a test spot. Scratch-x, swirl-x, uc. See what gives you the results you want. Then you will know what to use.

Since you already have ColorX and UC in your possession, do a test spot first with the ColorX and evaluate the progress. Just treat a small area, about the size of a microfiber towel, and then look at that area under the same lighting conditions that revealed the swirls to you in the first place.

If a single application removed the vast majority of the defects, than that tells you you're on the right track. A second application, or just a single but more aggressive application, should do the trick. On the other hand, if you see no real progress after a single application of ColorX, then step up to the UC but still do just a test spot - right next to your first test spot is a good plan so you can compare the results easily.

Yes, ColorX to UC is a fairly big step, but we don't really want any of you taking the concept of "use the least aggressive method to get the job done" to the Nth degree. We are not suggesting that everyone go out and buy ColorX, ScratchX 2.0, SwirlX and Ultimate Compound just so they can work their way up the scale. Especially if you're going to be working by hand it sometimes helps to have a product that's a bit more aggressive. Besides, if one of the two products Clarky already has in hand will work, there really is no reason for him to pick up something else just because it's less aggressive.

Of course, if ColorX doesn't do the job and UC hazes the paint badly, then that's reason to go out and purchase between the two. If the car has very soft and delicate paint then UC may very well be too aggressive, but that's what test spots are all about! And if UC is needed to remove the defects but it still leaves a tiny bit of hazing behind, ColorX will clean that right up and leave wax protection at the same time. After all, Clarky will have to wax after using UC (or SwirlX) anyway.

Thanks for all the feedback guys. Thanks Michael I think I may do just that, once I have washed and clayed the car, I will look at it under the same light as I have color x, I will apply that on a test area, see how it goes, then do a second application if need be. I assume with color x you need to apply it pretty agressively as opposed to just wiping it on. If not I will step up to the ultimate compound. After which I will apply NXT 2.0

What I would do is polish the paint as well as I could by hand, my chosen product would be SwirlX, then follow with a filling Glaze. Somthing like Poorboys Black Hole (althought use the one for light coloured cars, I forget the name). Then wax.

The best way would be to hit it with a rotary though.
