  • Help with SS paint please

    Hi guys,

The other day I tested our 71' Dodge Charger's paint and I can confirm it is single stage finish. The paint is in excellent condition and very bright (this is without any polish or wax at the moment) - note: the paint has 'very very' light swirls/scratches that look like a light cutting compound would completely remove... would ColorX be the best option? .

Here is a photo of the car (Sorry, this is the only photo I have at the moment! but it is unedited, so may give you an idea):

Can you guys recommend what polish (assuming a pure polish will be the best option) and what things to change (technique/product wise) when working on a SS paint finish compared to a clear coat?

    Thanks guys!

Not a drastic difference. It will like polishing oils more, and may be softer.

Is it original, repaint? Do you notice any thinning anywhere?

ColorX would certainly be fine for it. #80 is always good for single stage. #7 or Deep Crystal Polish would be the pure polishes to look at.

For single stage paint that looks to be in good shape but has a few light swirls, we highly recommend M80 Speed Glaze - light to moderate defect removal ability and a good concentration of polishing oils to keep the paint glossy and healthy. Apply a coat of NXT Tech Wax 2.0 or M26 High Tech Yellow Wax after and you're good to go.

Great looking car, by the way!

        Thanks again guys!

Murr: Yeah, it has been repainted probably around 5 or so years ago? I don't notice any thinning either

Michael: Thank you very much she really stands out and the bugs love hanging around her too (probably think she's the 'Queen Bee' hehe.

I will definitely go out and buy #80 and #7 and then, following with a coat of TechWax 2.0. I better wait for the vicious rainy weather to calm down before starting the detail though

        Cheers,

Hard to say if you will see a big change with #7 after #80... but still fun to apply a pure polish ,esp by hand.

Haha, thanks guys. Yeah, this is (not being modest here ) the best example in the country ... in saying that, there are only probably 3-4 left that are road worthy/remaining... and even less then that again that were imported 'as new' into the country like this one was hehe

Thanks for the kind words, here is another pic for you guys:

...and one more, but now I've ran out for the time being haha

Re: Help with SS paint please

                    Hey guys, just an update:

Today I went out looking for #80 and couldn't find it anywhere, so I bought a bottle of #7.

                    My detail order:
                    1) wash - NXT gen
                    2) clay - Meguiar's clay bar
                    3) [cutting compound]
                    4) #7
                    5) NxtGen techwax 2.0 wax 'or' GC Carnauba wax (can someone please advise the best option?).

Murr, did you reckon that 'ColorX' would be the best light cutter before applying #7?

Read this article for a more complete understanding of single-stage paint restoration and upkeep: http://meguiarsonline.com/forums/showthread.php?t=44023
I know it sound strange to polish first with M07, then use the more aggressive M80 later, but it works great.
It's obvious from your pics that your Mopar is in great shape, so you don't need an elaborate finish restoration. Considering the rapid deterioration rate of SS paint, you likely can still benefit from multiple aggressive applications of M07 to benefit from its high oil content. Follow with M80 on any areas that may need any minor correction, then finish with your favorite LSP's. I've been happy with NXT, followed by M16 or M26, but try a few different combos to see what appeals to your eyes.
                        Nice car!

Re: Help with SS paint please

ColorX could be used that way, but I dont think it would be best.

I like to think of details this way:

                          Quick:
                          1. Wash
                          2. Clay if needed
                          3. ColorX
                          4. Wax

                          Full:
                          1. Wash
                          2. Clay if needed
                          3. Clean- This is where the options are, how strong you need, etc. For light cleaning, things like #80, #205, #9, SwirlX are all options. May even have Deep Crystal Cleaner available. Those would all be mild (SwirlX being the strongest one of them), and all fair options if you dont need much as far as defect removal, etc.
                          4. Polish - Optional, good for single stage. #7 is good.
                          5. Wax
                          6. Wax - 2 thin coats are best.
