  • New detail job...

    Hey guys,
I'm soon going to be detailing my dad's car, and here is what I plan to do:

1.Start off with a thorough wash (including door jams)

    2. Dry the car

    3. Clay with the quick clay kit

    4. Use ultimate compound over most of the car

    5. Deep crystal polish

    6. A coat of NXT 2.0

This is my fist detail, so i'm open to any help (I'll need it)
Once I finish, I'll post pics.
I'll be doing it all by hand, and I just wanted to ask if it sounds alright??

btw- the car is metallic black, about 5 years old

    Thanks, BMW-5

Many swirls, scratches, etc? Or just general cleaning at the moment?

Able to find some smooth foam applicators, or MF applicators?

      Sounds good.

Don't forget around here two thin coats of wax is recommended.

Umm, Yes i'm going to buy plenty of foam applicators, and mf's as well,

do i need 1 mf for each product??, cause here they're quite expensive (10 dollars each)

And how long between each application of NXT??
        Thanks

          Re: New detail job...

Yeah, 1 applicator and towel per step would be the minimum. Though you could get away with the same applicator, maybe same towel for the wax, unless they loaded up too much. Even then, you may get to where it seems like a towel is loading up with product, making it harder to remove.

And dropping them always uses up towels faster, dont want to re-use them without checking and washing them.

There may be a quality option that isnt Meguiars if needed.

It is nice to wait at least 15 minutes between coats of wax, 24 hours for best looks.

            Re: New detail job...

            Thanks for the info,,
The car has a decent amount of swirls, not excessive but decent,

I wash it with care, always using the two bucket method etc.
but daily use has its toll,

It also has a few deep scratches which i think the uc will help hide, but it wont be able to get rid of them, also do you think that the deep crystal polish step is needed?

does uc leave a wax ready finish??
            Thanks again

A pure polish is always optional but the color and type of paint will determine it's effectiveness. What color are you working on?

UC usually leaves a wax ready surface.

I'm working on a metallic black sedan,

and btw when using uc, how long do you have to work it by hand to let the abbrasives break down?

                  Hello

UC does not have diminishing abrasives likely the products from 8x series. UC is SMAT featured

                  Take a look here:

Hey man, dont forget the lights. You need a good light position to see your work on the paint.

My one piece of advice that I suggest you HIGHLY listen to is Do a test spot!

Go ahead and wash then clay, and then do a test spot with the ultimate compound. Pull it out into the sun and see if it took the defects out, and if not, then see if another application will work. (remember it isn't like wax, where you wipe on, let dry and wipe off, you have to work the product in and remove the defects) Once you have found out a good process with the UC to remove the swirls, you may have some hazing left over. If there is still hazing, go ahead and hit it with a little bit of swirl x or another mild polish ( I don't believe deep crystal has any abrasives in it) Then once it looks golden hit it with wax and you are good to go.

Basically do a test spot to figure out your entire process on the car before you do the whole car. There would be nothing worse than seeing that your process didn't take the swirls out, after you finished doing the whole car by hand.

Read the instructions on bottles, and Do a test spot!!!!

                      Good Luck!

I once put swirls in my paint just to see what it looked like.

                      I don't always detail cars, but when I do, I prefer Meguiar's.
                      Remove swirls my friends.
