  • Brush vs Mitt, saw Mike using brush

    Hey guys

I always thought the long brush seen in this video with Mike Phillips was a no no.

I would love to be able to use a brush like this as it would make washing the car so much faster. I guess I got the "brush is bad" thing from hearing about those DIY car washes. Does Meguiars make one?

Do you guys use a brush?

I think the "bad" brushes are the cheaper ones with nylon bristles....the one on the vid is a Montana Boars hair brush...pretty pricey item...

I use a nylon bristle brush on my DD all the time....did not see any scratches....I'm thinkin of getting one of these boars hair brushes

Montana Original Boar's Hair Car Wash Brushes - Boar's hair is nature's most durable hair. This soft yet strong hair is more durable than camel hair and sheds less than horse hair. It's no wonder that so many car collectors and aficionados use ...

Meguiars used to make one as well, been discontinued for a while.

Shame because it was good quality and not too pricey.

As mentioned above, it is like anything else, there are good ones, and there are bad ones.

Re: Brush vs Mitt, saw Mike using brush

I have a couple of the discontinued Meguiar's brushes and I like them lots for when my trucks are really dirty. No problem with marring at all. Most of the time I will come back with a mitt to get at the places the brush might have missed. When my Meguiar's brushes are no longer usable, I'll for sure buy a boars hair brush. They are definitely worth the money.

Anything you use to wash your car that is coarse, hard or dirty is going to be bad for the paint. As with anything, there are good and bad versions of car wash tools, whether that be mitts, sponges, brushes, towels, etc. As others have pointed out, a quality boar's hair brush is safe for use on paint, as long as you follow some good common sense practices. Keep it clean while using it, meaning rinse it out often, and clean it before putting it away. Just as you should wash and dry your mitts and drying towels after every use, keeping a brush clean will go a long way toward keeping your paint looking good.

But don't cheap out when buying a brush, or any other tool. And that could be a potential issue for some: the difference between a cheap wash mitt and a really good one is only a few dollars. But a true, high quality boar's hair brush can run $80, $90 or more.

And I stockpiled them from Big Lots for about 3-4 $ each when they were discontinued!
