  • 3" backing plate came apart

I detailed a boat this weekend, and in anticipation of the detail I purchased some 4" pads and the 3" backing plate that goes with them.

I used the combo for about two hours with my DA, and then I started noticing some metal flake "dust" as I was working. It was weird, because at the time I was working on a metallic flake portion of the boat. I kept going, not really thinking about it because the paint on the boat looked fine, but then all of a sudden my pad/backing plate fell off my DA.

It looks as though the backing plate couldn't handle the vibrations and it rounded out the soft aluminum (?) on the inside of the backing plate. The short threaded adapter that goes between the backing plate and the DA seems to be fine and intact.

I also noticed that the velcro backing on the back of the pad was not perfectly centered in the center of the pad.

Who should I contact regarding this? Meguiars, or the retailer (ADS)?

    Thanks!

so did the pad tear apart or did the backplate tear up?

or can u just put it back on and keep polishing?

Same thing happened to me but I was using a buff and shine backing plate. I didnt think much of it and threw it away. I dont think I had the plate tightened as much as I should have though. I have since bought the S3BP and have not had any issues.

Yeah, I was using the S3BP. I think my speed was somewhere around 3.5-4. I had been cleaning the pad on the fly. The pad didn't tear up, and the backing plate didn't tear up. I couldn't continue use because the threads where the adapter screws in are completely gone.

You should give the customer care hotline a call for this.
