  • Ultimate Wax - What Do You Think I Did Wrong?

    Hello, everybody!

I am new here. Just bought a new black Toyota Camry SE. It is my first black car. Washed with the two buckets. Did the clay bar all over the car. First time doing that! What a nice difference that made!

By hand, I put one coat on the sides and two coats on top side. I only put one coat on the side since I had been out there for 6 hours and was running out of steam on Sunday. Figured that I could apply another coat next weekend. It was 90 degrees and high humidity and I ain't as young as I used to be. Applied the wax in the garage which is not well lit. Applied the wax to the whole car first and then polished it off. Thought that I had everything really shinny until I got to work today (Monday) and saw it in the sunshine. It looked sort of blotchy as if I didn't get all of the wax off. Not grey but a shades of black and dark grey. I quickly threw on the new car cover (Noah) and went inside and prayed nobody saw me. Got home and polished another 2 hours on the top and the blotching started going away. Put a second coat on the sides and polished away but still not sure that I have it right. The sides still don't look right. I just way not be used to a really shinny car.

Do you think it more the fault of the newbie polishing (technique) or could it be that the paint just took the wax at a bit differently in places?

Would a buffer like they sell on this site give me a better and more uniform result?

BTW, Thank you for the great videos and the advice. You have opened my eyes to what is possible.

Did you re-wash after claying? If not, you probably had clay/lube residue on the paint. Or, you may have applied too much UW...thin, thin, thin is the mantra.

Or, you may have paint defects that make the UW look inconsistant...must prep the paint by properly correcting the defects. You'll never do it by hand. Buy a Griots 6" DA.

A cleaning step after the clay may have been helpful.

And yeah, probably got it applied a little heavy in spots.

Are you using the liquid or paste version? If you're using the liquid version, you might have to mist the blotchy areas with water and wipe it off until it's gone.

With the liquid version of Ultimate Wax you may find that applying to 2 or 3 panels and then wiping off before proceeding further will eliminate the blotchy appearance. A drying time of just 3-5 minutes often works best with UW Liquid whereas the paste can dry fully after applying it to the whole vehicle in one go.

It is important, however, to always apply it in a very thin coat - this is true for any wax, really. A heavy coat just takes longer to dry, is more difficult to wipe off, and basically wastes product. A heavy coat doesn't leave any more wax on the surface after wipe off, so there really is zero benefit to applying a heavy coat.

As Marc suggests, if you're still seeing some light blotchy spots, try spritzing a small amount of plain water onto a microfiber towel and going over the car with that. That should also eliminate the uneven appearance if done immediately following wipe off.

Just used the UW liquid on my sons grey Golf this weekend and this technique worked great for me. He said his car looked "killer" when he saw it! I also used clay and then UP on a 8207 polishing pad before hand but still had a little trouble with the blotchy thing. Awesome wax though!

You aren't alone with the blotchy issue. The first time I used UW, I didn't get any blotches, however yesterday when I applied it, I got blotches.

I applied it both times with a DA very very thinly. I guess I'll try the water and microfiber to see if it helps.

I once put swirls in my paint just to see what it looked like.

                I don't always detail cars, but when I do, I prefer Meguiar's.
                Remove swirls my friends.

Some great tips everybody, thanks. I used the liquid.

DOH! JMZ is right. I forgot to rewash after using the clay bar (...stupid...stupid).
What is the best thing for me to do now?

The color in places under the shine looks like the general color of the clay. Shiny beyond believe with this faint clay bar looking color. It didn't register until jaymz mentioned it. Love the wax. Hate the undertones of my doing - no doubt.

So gang ... should I strip off the wax, rewash, clay bar, wash again and try the wax again in small areas at a time since I have the liquid (thanks, Michael Stoops for the clarification on liquid vs. paste) or there something better to try first?

                      What would you do?

I used it the sun twice with almost zero streaking. The second time I used it in the sun, it was 84 degrees out and the BLACK paint was freaking hot so it streaked a little in places but nothing major.

I would go ahead and re-wash and re-clay. Then maybe apply a cleaner/wax like A12 (Maroon bottle) or Colorx. Then go ahead and apply Ultimate Wax again the way Mike said.

                          Thanks, Shawn T.

Will try the re-wash and re-clay route. Sure hate thought of stripping it off with Dawn or such but would do it if I needed to.

Many thanks to you, Mike and the others for their advice - not only here but throughout the forum.
