What polish after Ultimate Compound?

    What polish after Ultimate Compound?

    I'm trying to repair a single stage paint that has some pretty bad oxidization on it, scratches and water marks (it's a 20 year old car). Right now, here's my plan of action:

    1. Wash car with Gold Class
    2. Clay
    3. PC + CCS Orange + Ultimate Compound
    4. Polish?
    5. NXT Wax

    I'm not looking for a show car finish, just something that restores the paint to its original color/shine. So are these the correct steps? Is the 'Polish' step necessary? If so, would polishing with ScratchX 2.0 be too aggressive? If so, what polish would you guys recommend IF it is a necessary step before waxing? Any help would be greatly appreciated thanks!

    Welcome to Meguiar's Online.

    If it's a 20-year old single stage paint I would recommend two products:

    1. M80 Speed Glaze
    2. M83 Dual Action Cleaner Polish (more aggressive than M80).

    They both work great on those type of paints, can successfully restore neglect and remove oxidation leaving surface glossy.

    1. Wash
    2. Clay
    3. M80 or M83
    4. Protect/ Wax - your favorite finishing wax

    Have more buffing pads ready as the base coat of paint will be removed and stored on the pads.

      Ultimate Polish. Just finished my Spring detail using:

      Ultimate Compound
      Ultimate Polish
      BFWD
      Danase Wet Glaze

      Looks great!

        I agree with Greg. If I were you, I would pick M80 speed glaze because you probably removed majority of the defects with Ultimate Compound already.

        May I also suggest using M7 (show car glaze) after hitting your paint with M80? This pure polish reacts very well with single stage paints.

          Single stage paints love a good polish, so we'd recommend that you not skip that step following Ultimate Compound. M80 Speed Glaze is a light cleaner with a lot of polishing oils in it that can do wonders to really richen and deepen the color of single stage paints. M07 Show Car Glaze is a pure polish (meaning it has zero cutting action) and can be used as often as you like once you've gotten the paint dialed in to your satisfaction. Wax should be applied after either of these two steps.

            Thanks Greg. Are you saying that I should not use Ultimate Compound altogether or use M80/M83 AFTER using Ultimate Compound?

            Also what's a good pad to the polish on? CCS White?

              On single stage paints M80 or M83 may be aggressive enough to deal with defects as those paints tend to be not as hard as two stage version.
              Lake Country white polishing pad (either flat or CCS) would be the one to go with.

              However if neither of those products can remove defects nor bring paint to the level of your satisfaction then Ultimate Compound can be brought into the game. M80 or M07 Show Car Glaze (as Mike suggested above) would be good liquids to follow up before wax/ protection.

              Meguiar's always recommends to go with the least aggressive product first so a quick test spot with M80/ M83 would be a good start.

                      I use menzerna 106FA after UC. But for a megs products, I've been wanting to try ultimate polish.
