  • Ultimate polish on new paint?

Real quick question, I got my car back from the body shop about two weeks ago and it turned out okay, but there are some swirls in the new paint. It was an insurance repair, so they painted about 1/2 of the car. The original paint was oxidized and scratched up, so I hit the panels that had the old paint with rubbing compound.

I'm planning on using polishing compound on the entire car then following that up with Ultimate Polish. Would there be any problems doing this on the new paint or is there something else I should use? I know I shouldn't wax it for at least another month or two to allow the new paint to finish outgassing.

    Thanks!

You need to check with the body shop on when to do anything more than just a basic wash on the fresh paint. Many shops recommend 30 to 45 days before wax, etc. My son & daughter-in-law just had their car in the shop and I was told 30 days on their metallic black Pontiac Vibe.

As i Car painter i suggest not putting no wax for a min of 30 days. That will give the clear time to fully cure.

Like I said in the first post, I know about not waxing it for a while. I am wondering if the Ultimate Polish, which from what I understand is not a wax, is safe to apply to the new paint or if I should use something else. Thanks

While UP is most likely perfectly safe to use, we really do suggest sticking with a body shop safe product during these initial few weeks following the respray. M07 Show Car Glaze is a great choice for right now. No, it won't remove any of the fine swirls you have but it may help to conceal them quite well. Once that paint is cured you can go to work on fully removing the swirls. Of course, you could use a different body shop safe product like M80 or M83 for swirl removal now if you like. After all, the body shop has already buffed it to some level with similar products, so further refining on your part is certainly an option.

But whether or not you want to go out and buy some new products to use during this curing time is up to you.

I would leave it alone for at least 30 days. Just wash it often.

I painted part of my car 2-3 years ago and I waited 90 days to wax the car. It was painful.
