  • Bit the Bullet ...

So I stopped off on the way home from work this morning, picked up the necessary supplies and dove into the seeming, mammoth task of getting the 2007 VW GTI on the road to paint recovery nirvana. My supply list: Gold Clash Wash, Smooth Surface Clay Kit, Swirl-X, Ultimate Compound, Ultimate Polish, found the tin of Gold Class Paste Wax in the basement along with some Plast-X.

After a quick wash and dry (since I already washed it the night before at work), I clayed the Hood. Clay came out pretty clean, nothing too much, just some light yellow residue which was prob the wax job put on by the dealer. I did use a slight bit of Swirl-X next. Seeing how I was in the shade of the trees in the yard, I couldnt tell much difference. (And terrified I was going to cause more harm than good I moved on.) Next was the Ultimate Polish.

At this point I become concerned and REALLY frustrated.

The temperature was rising quickly, even though I was in the shade, and the clock read well past noon. The UP dried WAY to quickly for me. I hardly had time to apply and work on a thin coat before it would dry up (causing much cursing under my breath) and a pain to buff out by hand. So after the hood had a quick coat of polish. I decided to call it quits due to the TEMP and the product drying to fast. So I used the Ultimate Quick Wax that came with the Clay Kit and headed for some much needed lunch.

The results: I knew it was a metallic paint job ... but HOLY COW! I don't remember that much 'glitter.' Pleased ... yes and no. No at the fact that the dang heat of the day caused me to literally toss in the towel; Yes at the results of 4 hours of hard work. Swirls are still present but masked by the fact that there are a million sparkles and smooth surface from the now rejuvenated paint. This battle is concluded, but the war is far from over.

    A few questions however ...

Even tho the hood has a light coat of the Ultimate Quick Wax, I still want to put at least one coat of Gold Class paste wax. Can it go over the quick wax?
If so, since it will be later in the evening or even tomorrow morning ... will I have to wash the hood again before applying the wax?

Water spots on front windshield and sunroof ... what will take them off?

Shooting for the Hatchback tomorrow morning maybe even the roof. We'll see. Pic's to come.

Really no need to do SwirlX and Ult. Polish in the same detail, just wasting time.

Also, you may find it just as easy to clay everything at once, then move onto the other steps section by section, or however you need to break it up.

Yeah, when it is hot, just have to work smaller areas at a time. Also, be sure to use enough product. Less wax is good, but when using a cleaner, you have to have some to work in with your applicator.

As mentioned before, you'll probably be shining it up this time, worrying about swirls next time.

    Sure, shouldnt be an issue.

If it is dusty, you'll at least want to QD.

Depends... start with clay. Then the Ult. Compound.

What have you been using for applicators so far?

+1. The water in Phoenix is as hard as rocks. I use this 50/50 solution all the time with excellent results. I also use a RO (reverse osmosis water source) for the solution...which helps a lot. Good luck, give it a try.

SO ... I started yesterday morning claying the rest of the car. Polished and waxed the passenger side and hatchback. The temp was rising again, so I took a breather to mow the lawn. Thunderstorm rolled in and didnt get a chance to finish anything! Not the car nor the lawn, man cant get a break.

At the firehouse for next 48 hrs, so I'm thinking after 1500 or so I will be trying to finish this project.

Man that's during the heat of the day again, so work one small area at a time to avoid probs. Welcome to the forum by the way.

Overcast and mid to high 70's. Plus I can use the apparatus bay where one of the pumpers is in the shop. So rain or shine this will get done today. (unless we get a ton of calls)

FINALLY! After several days, rain delays, and work ... here's the final product! It looks a million times better than when I drove it off the lot. The dullness of the paint is gone and the metallic flake sparkles like the Milky Way! Thanks too all!

Looks great, glad it went well for you.

Always easier to maintain in the future. And can look into detailing all the other parts now..
