  • Black Chevy Tahoe, M80 or M205

    Hi everyone,
    I have a black '08 Chevy Tahoe and have been using M80 Speed Glaze with a Porter Cable DA polisher and polishing pad to remove the swirls then follow-up with M26 wax by hand. The M80 does a great job on the swirls but I would like to bring up the shine and clearity further before I wax. Would M205 be a better choice to remove swirls and and deliver a clearer shine on GM black paint?

    GM paint like all paint can vary in tons of ways down to the day it was painted at the factory. but the main diffrence between M80 and M205 is diminishing abrasives. 205 uses diminishing abrasives and m80 does not so m205 will breakdown and give you a more polished shine than m80 would.
    ---> what are diminishing abrasives

    the key here is make sure you let the product break down and that you work small areas

      Worth a shot, or Ult. Polish.

        On modern clear coats M205 may outperform M80 and you don't have to fully work buffing cycle because it's SMAT product.
        Ultimate Polish is very similar to M205.

        As Mat (Murr1525) said above, give it a try and see if you like it better.

          Hi Vettefan,

          I would think that M205 will work better on your Tahoe's paint system compared to M80.

          How severe are your swirl marks? If M205 can't take out the swirls in your paint then you should try using Ultimate Compound or M105 to remove majority of the defects. After this step is done then you can further refine the paint's finish and amp up the gloss with M205 or Ultimate Polish.

              Actually, it's the other way around. M205 utilizes SMAT while M80 utilizes diminishing abrasives. But it isn't just the way the abrasives work that give one the edge over the other. Sure, the abrasives in M80 will break down to a very fine level but those in M205 are extremely small to begin with, plus they are very uniform in size and shape which is what helps it to give so much clarity to the paint. On a modern clear coat we would definitely give the nod to M205 as far as final finish goes. Initial cut can be very similar too so if you can remove fine defects with M80 you should still be able to do so with M205.
