  • immaculate paint job, ..turns out, not so much

well turns out i have found a flaw in my 11 black silervado

i washed my truck the other day, and we have a party to goto today
so i took out the u/d to touch up the truck
and the sun was just right and a saw a bunch of water spot looking things on the hood

i cant get them to come out on camera, ill try again later or tomorrow

at 1st i thought they were just water spots, but they didnt come off
so i took a little u/p on a small spot, that didnt do anything
then i took scratch x on a small spot 3 times, that did nothing

im afraid they are under the c/c
has anyone seen this b4 , or have any idea how to get rid of them if they are under the c/c?

im thinking getting some u/c and a r/a buffer

    thanks

Ultimate Compound definitely worth a shot. By the way, are you experienced with a rotary? If not, you may want to go with a D/A. That's the route I took anyway. Its real easy to damage paint with a rotary I hear.

Welcome to the "wonderful world of black". It took me thirty years to give upon that color. The spots quite likely are a bit of water etching. Your truck probably sat on the lot for a while. It can either be just minerals or a bit worse..acid rain. Try a solution of white vinegar and water...50/50. The vinegar can be even a little stronger. It may take several applications. Hopefully that will "git-r-done". Yep, you will have to polish and wax the area that you cleaned. (Vinegar is a very mild acid. That's why it works. It will not damage the paint.)

Hopefully just on the surface. They can get deep fast sometimes though, and be hard to remove.

Re: immaculate paint job, ..turns out, not so much

If these marks are actually etched into the paint and whatever etched them is gone, then the only way to remove them is to remove a bit of the surrounding paint, which is what you're doing with anything from ScratchX 2.0 to wet sanding and everything in between. (No, we are NOT recommending that you wet sand, just making a point). The vinegar and water process works great if what you're seeing are deposits of something left behind, but if, as stated above, there's nothing left but etched paint, vinegar won't fix the etch itself. It can do a wonderful job remove bonded stuff, but it won't level the paint.

Of course, if the problem really is under the clear coat, ie in the color coat, then you're done. There's just no way to reach through the clear and work on the color coat below it.

Certainly give the vinegar a shot as it's a great process for certain issues. If that fails, then we'd suggest a DA buffer with some UC as the next step.

well its been a WHILE!!. .but i finally got to it
                  tried the vinegar/water, several times
                  and the u/c twice

                  heres what i did
                  clay bar
                  vinegar water 60/40 mix
uc, by hand twice, lots of elbow grease
but it didnt touch the marks
so then i did a coat of u/p
                  and wax
the hood looks great, no more swirls
but the marks are still there
guess ill have to live with it

Sometimes they get deep fast... a machine will certainly give a chance in the future... or just try to remove them a little bit in the spring, etc...
