    Detailing Steps Order

    I have a 2010 Acura TL, Diamond White Pearl, with some very light oxidation marks on the paint.

    I just bought a Meguiar Dual Action Polisher and some Ultra Finishing Polish, Mirror Glaze Professional Show Car glaze, and NXT Generation Tech Wax, and I just want to confirm the order they should be used.

    1) Ultra Finishing Polish applied with Soft Buff Foam cutting pad
    2) Mirror Glaze with Soft Buff Foam polishing pad
    3) Tech Wax with Soft Buff Foam finishing pad

    Did I get that in the right order?

    Yes, that is the right order. However, the #205 wants the polishing pad.

    Almost never a need for a cutting pad with a DA.

    I am not sure that you will see much, if any, difference using the #7 after the #205, but can try a test panel to see.

    2 coats of wax is best. And #205 is a mild cleaner, just have to remember Ult. Compound if a stronger cleaner is needed.

      As Murr states, you do not want to use the cutting pad with M205. M205 is a very fine finishing polish designed as a secondary step following your major defect removal process, which is usually done with Ultimate Compound or M105 or similar. As such, it should be coupled with a softer pad to help with refining of the finish after that more aggressive defect removal step. Along those same lines, M07 Show Car Glaze is a pure polish and should be applied with the least aggressive pad possible - the W9207 finishing pad. M07 is designed to do nothing more than add gloss, and should be used on a surface that has been prepped to perfection (or darn close). At that point, you don't want to use anything that will be aggressive in any way to the paint, and that means the finishing pad.

      In fact, we don't recommend using the W7xxx series of cutting pads with the DA at all because it's so aggressive, and paired with the action of the DA it has a high probability of hazing the paint.

      Given what you have on hand, and we're hoping that includes more than one each of the foam pads, here's what we'd do:
      1. After washing and drying, clay if needed.
      2. M205 on a W8207 yellow polishing pad, set the tool to speed 4 to 5, and use moderate pressure. While M205 is primarily a finishing polish, it's amazing how much cut you can actually get out of it when used in a slightly more aggressive manner. Add to this the fact that Acura paint is, for the most part, very receptive to correction and the extra bonus of yours being a light color and you should be able to remove the light defects you described. Since you have it on hand, give this a go.
      3. To really make the pearl in your pop, we'd follow this with a second pass of M205, this time on a W9207 black finishing pad, at speed 3 to 4, with only light pressure. In this configuration M205 will add a lot of clarity to the paint finish and really bring out metallic particles or the brilliance of a pearl finish.
      4. At this point, using M07 Show Car Glaze is an option. Everyone will tell you that a pure polish like M07 yields the best results on dark colors, and that's true. But a few weeks ago I was invited to assist a local MOL member with some work on his white 3 Series BMW and he had just picked up some M07 and wanted to try it. We were very pleasantly surprised to see how much more gloss that white paint picked up, and he loved it. So, it's an option, but if you want to push your finish to the limit, we say give it a go. So, which pad? Well, on a DA we'd say a fresh W9207 black finishing pad, but M07 is very quick and easy to apply by hand since it's basically a wipe on, wipe off product. If you're running short of finishing pads and still need one for your wax, then apply M07 by hand.
      5. NXT 2.0 to finish off. Again, with the DA use the W9207 black finishing pad, and spread a very thin coat over all the painted surfaces of the car. Thin is key here - it only takes a very small amount as shown in this thread. Let it dry completely before wiping off with a clean microfiber towel.

        Thanks so much, Murr & Michael, for the tips. I will return my cutting pads, since it sounds like they aren't necessary.

        It looks like the polishing pads I ordered are the W8006, and the finishing pads are the W9006. Are they OK, or should I return them and get W8207 & W9207?

          The cutting pad is only needed if you are going to remove wax with the machine. So that is just up to you.

          You got the '1.0' pads, that are not machine washable. Can be more convenient to have the 2.0 ones, but not critical. The adhesive is better, to keep the velcro on the pad if it gets wet cleaning it.

          I clean my 1.0 pads in the sink, and havent had issues, I just try not to soak them, and then air dry for a while.

          If they were the same price, maybe take them back. If you got a good price, no big deal.
