  • Meguiar's Chrome Polish on paint! OOPS!

I am normally one of the most careful people you will meet when it comes to car care, but unfortunately this morning I grabbed my Meguiar's Hot Rim Chrome Polish bottle instead of my Meguiar's Gold Class Wax and just waxed my 2006 Mustang GT after washing this morning!!! I stood there dumbfounded at the end when I realized what I just did. I am freaking out. Should I wash the car again? Should I just apply a layer of wax? On a positive note, the Chrome polish cleaned up my vinyl stripes like brand new!

Please help! I believe the Meguiar's Chrome Polish is safe for paint just like Meguiar's swirl remover, but has anyone done this before, or can I be documented on the internet as the first idiot to do this?

      Probably the first...

It would be safe, just strong. But since you werent working it in, should be ok. Just wax over it.

I guess you can say I did work it in, just as you would apply any wax in a small circular motion. I applied a layer of Meguiar's Gold Class wax over it last evening. The polish definitly made the car feel like I had taken a claybar to it. I hope I didnt mess up the clear coat. I will say, if anyone is looking for a compound to clean their vinyl stripes, they cannot go wrong with the Hot Rim's Chrome Polish. I swear they look like brand new!!! Took out years of grime that washing couldnt.

Well, not like working in a paint cleaner.

As long as there were now swirls caused, you'll be ok.

Well, obviously we don't recommend using our chrome polish on paint, but if you just applied it lightly like a wax and wiped it off and you noticed no immediate negative effects, then you're perfectly fine. If you were going to cause any problems with this product on your paint it would happen immediately - either during the application process or removal of the dried product. If you did not see anything negative immediately following use of the product, then you really have zero to worry about. Any minimal residue you may have left behind is not going to actively interact with the paint and cause any sort of issue down the road. In fact, any slight residue that might still be left behind should pretty easily just wash off next time you wash the car. If you have since waxed over it though, again, zero to worry about.
