  • Cleaning up a 2006 Honda Ody

Hello all. New on the site here and have been putting a good deal of time into researching products and methods to clean up the paint on my wifes baby. It is a 2006 Midnight Blue (metal flake) Honda Ody and is the kid carrier for football, Scouts etc. Also gets the occasional long distance road trip. My problem is that being a DD, it has its fair share of door dings, scuffs, swirl marks and scratches. I'm not even going to worry about that plastic gash in the front of the passenger side outside rear view mirror from a mailbox pull handle. I have typically used Blue Coral car wash with a no name brand MF wash mitt, followed up by Megs Cleaner/ Wax for protection. I have begun to really realize how I could do better with what I normally do. With Christmas coming I am putting the DA buffer on the Santa list but in the meantime want to start getting the paint into shape. I had previously used a scratch remover to lessen the scratches which made the paint worse since I used it on the whole car. Anyway, with all the noticeable swirls and scratches, I would appreciate the boards advice. Here is what I was thinking of doing:

    - Wash with the Blue Coral I have remaining and dry with an Absorber. (Have read that it is an excellent product to remove the remaining water after sheeting off the big stuff)
    - Start the paint cleaning with the clay bar kit from Megs, remove with a MF towel
    - Use SwirlX or Deep Crystal Paint System Cleaner to finish getting the paint clean and to remove as mush as possible the swirls and haze
    - Next step, use Deep Crystal System Polish for the deep polished look
    - Follow up with Gold Class Carnauba Plus. I used the original version years ago on a Trans Am I owned and was very impressed with its deep shine

Like I say, from a real detailing standpoint I have very little experience and have always done my waxing with an applicator and removal with a cotton towel or orbital polisher with a terry cloth cover. Appreciate the feedback.

First let me say welcome to MOL! Your system is good. But that being said, in my opinion, maybe expand your product selection a bit.

    Glad to have you aboard!

      1. Wash - 2 buckets, Grit Guards, good soap, good quality mitts/towels.
      2. Clay
      3. Clean - You would likely want the Ult. Compound as a stronger cleaner to try to remove swirls/scratches. Then Ult. Polish for a milder follow up.
      4. Polish - Dont really need a pure polish if you use the Ult. Polish.
      5. Wax
      6. Wax - 2 thin coats is best

      7. Maintain - A spray wax like the Gold Class Spray Wax is good far after future washes.

You may also want to use something like T.R.I.X if the car seems dirty, tar, etc. Would be good before claying.

Generally, you would want smooth foam applicators for applying the products, and a MF towel for removing.

However, if you are buying a buffer, I wouldnt spend a lot of time worrying about removing swirls by hand. But at least you could shine it up some to see what you are working on.

Thanks for the welcome to the site. Lots to learn in order to it right. Understand the recommendation on the foam applicators for the wax. Looking around at several auto stores today, everyone seems to carry terry cloth and MF applicators as well as the palm handles for them but not foam applicators. Any thoughts on that? I have used the terry ones in the past but feel that they may have been one of the reasons that I have so many swirls and minor scratches in the clear coat. Even though I used several that were cleaned and kept moist during the application process. From your use of the UPW and UP, are they going to be a better product than the Deep Crystal System products? Also, showing my ignorance, what does T.R.I.X. stand for?

Really want the foam for all products. Some people like MF covered ones ( I dont), but generally dont want terry.

I think you usually have to orderthe Meguiars ones online. Just get a couple packs at once.

Well, the DC Cleaner is discontinued, so you wont be using that much longer anyway.... Do you mean the Ult. Paste Wax? Yeah, that will be more durable than the DC wax. And the Ult. Polish is kind of like the DC Cleaner and DC Polish combined.

But yeah, they are a step up.

No idea what TRIX stands for. You'll just have to google it.. CarPro I think is the brand.

Thanks Murr for the info. Yep, I did mean the UPW. Seems like from what I have ready that it last much longer from the standpoint of "cars in a can". I did see that Megs has the DC in the online store that was a reason for wondering about its availability.

Hmm.. shouldnt have the cleaner.. I'll have to look.

The Ult. Wax applies very thin, so that helps it last longer... and then its better durability.

Incidently, the New Car Care kit is a good way toget a few products, and the Ult. Wax Liquid Sample.

Or the Car restoration kit for a small UC and some Gold Class wax.
