  • OOPS! Waxed over Swirls

While working in dim light I washed; clayed; used Ultimate compound and then NXT 2.0. Next day in sun light I have major swirls. Do I have to remove wax to get rid of swirls, I have a cheap orbital machine which I did not use yesterday I did all the damage by hand. Before I started the paint was very dull and faded but now it is shiny and I can see my face but OH MY! terrible swirls. MY 2002 toyota tundra is white. Heeeellllllpp!!!!!!

No, you don't have to remove the wax first.

Sounds like you may have delicate(ish) paint. Step down to something like SwirlX to remove the hazing you've created, then re-wax..

We can go out for a drive without her makeup and she looks fine. If I want to take the black one out, it is three or four hours in the "bathroom" to get ready.

You also may have cleaned the dirt off the swirls to let them show.

Any chance of a pic of the surface in the sun?

We're thinking the same thing. This truck is 10 years old; when was the last time it had a thorough, deep cleaning that claying and Ultimate Compound provide? If the answer is "never" then it's quite possible that embedded dirt and oxidation were masking the swirls and after cleaning all that up, you're now able to see them much better. And 10 years ago Toyota was still using single stage white in some vehicles, so this could be very well be just that, which can compound the problem. It may not be anything you did at all that created these swirls, but then again...... it could be.

You said you applied these products by hand, but what sort of applicator did you use, and with how much pressure? A terry cloth applicator can be quite aggressive and could easily cause swirl marks. Then again, a proper foam wax applicator should not cause such issues, but improper use can still result in marring of the paint surface. This improper use generally involves pressure points created by your fingertips pressing through the foam pad, creating a sort of "cheetah spot" in the paint, along with other marring like swirls and hazing.

Thanks for your opinions the truck was waxed at detail shop about four years ago. Along time ago I know but working 10 to 12 hours a day trying to put my wife's doctors kids through college I didn't have time or money to do to much. I guess I could have fished a little less. I did use foam pads and moderate pressure, guess I will try the Swirl X and see what happens it does look good from a distance

              Re: OOPS! Waxed over Swirls

Just focus on a panel for now, or even a smaller area... dont spend time doing the whole truck, then check your work.

Did you get white on your pads at all?

You can try a spot with UC again, it may need worked in better if you just removed the dirt. But can try the SwirlX first.

No white on pads will try UC on a small section and do it 3 or 4 times using light pressure. Thanks for help this is a great site to offer so much help. I'm retired now so have a lot of time to shine truck.

                  Re: OOPS! Waxed over Swirls

if the pads didnt seem to get any white, that would mean the paint is clearcoated then.

Remember you have to remove some paint to level out the surface and remove swirls... similar to sanding. So you may need to try a couple things in small areas at first.

                  - You can try SwirlX worked in.. you can try UC applied more gently... (those would be more if the paint were soft, UC was a bit strong for the paint)

                  - and UC worked in with some more passion. (this would be if you just removed the dirt, and is going to take more effort to remove the swirls)

Trying a milder thing first is always a good idea, if unsure of what is going on.
