  • first time doing more than just clay and wax

whats up guys, new to this forum, gonna be detailing my car soon, been picking up some stuff here and there, i have swirls i want to remove. the products i have is mothers clay bar kit, meguiars ultimate compound, meguiars #9 swirl remover, meguiars ultimate polish, and meguiars ultimate paste wax.

from what ive been reading, these would be applied in the order i have them listed right? i have a lot of clean mf towels on hand, as well as the double bucket and grit guard for the wash. the next question i have is regarding washing after the applying m9, is it necessary? i read that it is not for swirl-x, i know it varies between the products being used. ive also read about using a quick detailer instead of washing. any input is appreciated. i have yet to pick up a polisher. still on the fence with the meguiars g110v2, or the porter cable 7424xp, along with some lake country pads. i dont know if i'll be getting it soon, so this might be put on by hand, over the course of a couple of days. thanks in advance

    1. Yes, that would be the order, although not nessicerily all needed. I would probably pick the #9 or the Ult. Polish, not both.

    2. No need to wash after any product, unless some specific reason comes up. Excessive dusting, working for a while in a dusty/dirty environment, etc.

    3. QD is for light dust, and can also be used for the reasons above. Again, not soemthing that is needed after every step, just if something comes up.

    4. If you work by hand this time, and are going to get a machine either way, then dont worry about the swirl removal this time. Not worth the effort if you buy a machine a couple weeks later.

Murr has a good point, as you're looking at a very ambitious project by hand. However, I certainly wouldn't want to dampen your enthusiasm, so here's my two cents; Since you have both M09 and UP, I'd recommend doing a test spot with each one. I've used a lot of M09 over the years with a rotary, as it was originally designed for machine use. UP was more tailored for the consumer market and hand application. Either one will finish LSP-ready, so see which one works best for you on your own paint and save yourself at least one step. And I also agree that there's no need to wash between steps. That's one nice point about using products from the same company, as they all tend to play well together.
