  • Marine Polish or Pro Line?

I just got a fiberglass boat and plan on polishing it up this spring. What is the difference between the marine line polishes/wax and pro line polishes?

My boat looks great overall with a few scratches here and there. My plan is to give it a deep gloss and make it silky smooth! And of course keep the gunk from the river off of it.

I have a DA and really like 101,201, M80 and NXT wax. I would use the 101/201 on the scratches and M80 on the rest.

What would be the benefit in using the marine polish/wax?

The marine line products are designed for gel coats, which can be thicker, harder to work on, etc. And also more porous, drier at times.

Nothing wrong with trying out the automotive products on the boat. Dont want to use Marine line on auto paint.

20 is a good wax to do a boat that's in good condition.
Last boat I did I used Flagship and it performed better then 20.
like murr said you can use auto on boat but not boat on auto

Could I use M45 with a DA and polish pad? Would this be effective? then go straight to wax?

Much like car paint, that is a bit hard to predict. The M45 will be on the milder side of the Marine Line products...

I would think you may need M44 at least... Or maybe M105 then M45...

I should have worded that better. Is the DA polisher effective on gel coat with the right polish? I'd try it out and see but its been an average of -20 degrees lately!

M105 and M45 sounds like what I will try. Only have a couple scratch areas to work out.

Sure, a DA can be used. Though gel coat can use the red cutting pad sometimes. Just would have to try a spot with your current pads and see.

If I use M49, will it finish out nice, or would I need to follow up with the M45?

Re: Marine Polish or Pro Line?

The M45 is oils only, so if there was marring left behind, it wouldn't do a lot for it probably.

If you had any marring, you would probably want to look at different pads, or a milder cleaner of some sort.

Re: Marine Polish or Pro Line?

You will find gelcoat much harder than any clearcoat and for any scratch removal you may have to go up to M67 or M105 with a maroon cut pad on a DA Polisher.

Light polishing : M49 or M205 on a yellow pad

                      Wax : Flagship Premium Wax

I guess I'll just have to try a few things.

Re: Marine Polish or Pro Line?

Due to the hardness and porosity of gel coat finishes (on average gel coat is about 10 times thicker than typical factory clear coat) you'll likely find the more aggressive abrasives in the Marine/RV line compounds and cleaners to be more effective. M105 does not like dried out surfaces and can be problematic on anything but very new gel coat. Our Marine/RV sales reps are huge fans of M67 One Step Compound on the burgundy foam cutting pad with a DA since it cuts quickly and is generally very easy to wipe off. A step down from that is M49 Oxidation Remover, so if the gel coat is in pretty decent shape to start with, that may be all you need. Of course, just as with a car, if you want to get the maximum gloss possible (especially on darker colors) an application of M45 High Gloss Polish prior to waxing is just the ticket. Pad selection would otherwise follow along with what you would use for similar steps when working on automotive paint.

Just bought some M49. I will try it as soon as the weather cooperates. The gel overall is in great shape with only a couple spots that are lightly oxidized and a few scratches here and there.

I love my NXT 2.0 wax. What is the advantage in using the flagship wax, if any?

You can use your NXT wax , But keep in mind the Flagship Marine Wax was designed for gelcoat and the marine environment .
It should give you longer durability and more protection.
