  • Tell me how bad....

Buffed through clear coat today on a hood.

While trying to remove a scratch, that you could not feel with your fingernail, I buffed through the clear coat.

Photo below shows damage. Area about the size of two dimes or quarters.

Is there a possible repair for the area or will a section of the hood need to be repainted? The area is in a section separated by body profiles. Something like airbrushing clear in the damaged area?

Or will the whole hood need to be painted?

Metallic base......if still good blend the clear.

progressive sanding from 600 to 800....blend clear.....wet sand and polish.
Use high quality clear for lasting transparency.
Sata mini Jet will do fine....

you can spot paint but you'll probably have problems in the future. I think the better choice is wax it and leave it alone. I did this to a car years ago, left it alone and it's still the same as in no paint failure from it, just the little spot I sanded through.

If you leave it, I would recommend a coating for that area.

It seems to be very noticable from your pic. I would take it to a GOOD paint shop and see if they can shoot it with enough clear to wet sand , then buff it out
A good painter should be able to tell you if he can blend it or if he needs to clear the whole hood.
Hey, but at least the scratch is gone !

Yeah, I got that part right!

I put a coat of wax over it and I can still see it. Not sure now if a coat of clear will fix it.

Thanks everyone for your comments. I meet with the owner next week to discuss options.

As an end to this discussion, I met with owner yesterday to review blemish.

He said he could barely see it and no repair needed.

Lesson learned, be careful with Ford paint.

Okay...be careful with all paint and avoid concentrated area corrections. Or
perhaps another instance a paint thickness gauge would have helped.

I did the same thing on my buds 06 Roush Mustang Convertible trying to blend a scratch. Felt really bad and offered to pay, but he has since did a custom paint job. Lesson learned was be real carefull with small 3 or 4 inch pads and speed settings. Any detailer that says they never messed up a car is flat out lying.
