Bug Splatter Removal

Quite awhile ago I noticed a post here on removing bugs that splattered themselves at high speed on the front bumper/hood of a car. Last Saturday evening, my son drove my car home at twilight through a marshy area of the freeway and I'm not sure I've seen a worse case of bug splatter on my car.

I wasn't able to get to it until Monday evening and I remembered the previous suggestion, which was to put wet towels on the affected area and let it soak for awhile. I filled a bucket with warm water and submerged two large cotton bath towels. Not wringing them out in any way I laid the sopping wet towels on the bug areas and left them for an hour or so.

When I returned, to my surprise the bugs had disintegrated and it was a very easy matter to simply use the still very wet towels to wipe down the area, followed by dry microfiber towels.

Compared to a similar (but not nearly as bad) bug splatter situation a few weeks ago where I used water, no-rinse wash, and a lot of elbow grease, this was a cinch.

I'm a believer.

Thanks for the info. I may try that on heavy bugs on my own car. Probably wouldn't have the time during a detail, but nice report!!

Great to hear it worked! Sometimes it's the simple solutions that work best.

I've been thinking of picking up some magnets to help hold the towels on the front of my truck. It's just too vertical for then to stay on otherwise. Seemed like a good idea to me as long as the magnets don't somehow touch the paint.

We've been recommending this process for a very long time but this may be the first instance where someone actually posted doing it. We usually suggest this when people post about struggling to remove heavy bug splatter but nobody ever comes back to say if they used this suggestion or if it worked. It's nice to see someone validating this!! With the introduction of our Bug Splatter Sponges, which actually work very well on mild or moderate bug splatter, you've not got a simple solution even if the splatter is really heavy or really old; use the warm water soaked towels to pre-treat the area and then use the Bug Splatter Sponges to clean up what's left.
