  • Ultimate Polish - micro swirls

OK. In the last chapter our hero tried UC with only meh results. The lovely townspeople suggested Ultimate Polish. UP tried with even more so so results.
So should I try deep crystal or No 7 or black wax or....... I'd rather not change waxes, frankly.
I applied with a new foam pad on a clean surface ('13 black Subaru).
Is there something milder than UP.

Some pics and letting us know what you are trying to accomplish would help

Long story short, just trying to make a black car really pop. Our hero isn't very bright but I, I mean he will endeavor to get some pics up.

Perhaps you should have continued in your previous thread.

From memory, we suspected you had soft paint and that UC was marring your paint.

So what happened with UP? Did it leave the original swirls/defects behind, or did it create it's own marring?

We can go out for a drive without her makeup and she looks fine. If I want to take the black one out, it is three or four hours in the "bathroom" to get ready.

And how was it applied, what pad used, etc.

Subaru paint isn't terribly soft usually, but going to a cleaner wax would be the milder option.

I would try altering the application techniques espcially if done by hand, I would wotk it in longer but with slightly lighter pressure. I would have at least 2 foam applicators per product, since it can build up and would affect the workability of UC and UP. Ultimate Polish is quite mild, milder than swirlX.

Are you doing this 'by hand' or machine?

We are seeing more and more comments on various forums, Facebook, etc about the new Subies having paint that is really difficult to deal with - products that are normally a breeze to use stick to it, it's really prone to marring even with a microfiber towel, etc.

Pictures would be a huge help here. And if the paint is really that delicate, working by hand can be extremely frustrating because it's often very difficult to avoid pressure points that will easily mar the paint. Sometimes a buffer is actually easier on the paint and will avoid some types of marring. Of course, an overly aggressive approach with a buffer will leave a whole different type of marring, but that's usually avoided by going with a very mild product/pad combo.

So very sorry not to get back. No computer for a day or two. Yes, Davey, you are correct I should have picked this up from a previous thread. I had tried UC earlier and it did leave a few swirls. A follow up waxing eliminated about 90-95 percent of those, to the point you really had to look.
After using Ultimate Polish the swirls, strangely, were more abundant yet finer in nature. A follow up wax did almost nothing to remove them.
Again, I will try to post pics as soon as practicable. And I guess look for some Deep Crystal polish.....If that doesn't work I may go to Meguiars directly and see what they have to say.
MANY serious thanks to all who have tried to help. This is a wonderful group and a great wealth of knowledge.
Oh, and Bille, I was working by hand with a foam applicator. I need to find a good source of new foam applicators.

All of your work was by hand?

Hmmm, that it's a little odd, unless there was too little product, or a bad towel too remove.

I don't think dc polish will help, other than just for info.

I would think a colorx perhaps, or white wax maybe if Mike doesn't think it is too strong.

Thanks Murr. I'll keep going and see what happens. Am I right in thinking that Deep Crystal is the next step down from Ult. Polish?

Deep crystal is a "pure" polish with no abrasives, just yummy for your paint oils. Ultimate Polish has SMAT (Super Micro Abrasive Technology) abrasives in it along with oils.

Davey, to answer your question. Using the UC I was able to almost totally remove the swirls it left with a quick follow up wax. But strangely the UP left more and finer swirls that my wax didn't touch (by hand, clean surface, foam pad). And thankfully, this is only one small test panel. If I had swirled the whole thing.....ooof

I was hoping that you were using a DA. Only because, I too work on a Subaru (2000), and yes their paint can be challenging.

I really have no tips different from what the other folks have mentioned.

Didn't get back in time for an 'edit' so I'll add...

You are using a foam pad, is it CLEAN? If not, clean that sucker (you don't want any of the more aggressive stuff interfering with the 'polish'), then polish...BUT (due to Subie's paint) don't lay into the pad with a lot of pressure. You want to be more on the gentle side than you would with a 'compound.' It is more of just letting the product work on its' own than using the abrasive properties of the foam.

                              Again, test spot first.

                              Make sense?
