  • Testing For Single Stage On White Paint

I know that if you have single stage paint it will turn your pad the color of the paint. How do you check for single stage white though since UC is a light color to begin with? Will it be obviously white on the pad or is there another way to tell. I have a buddy that has an older mr2 that is white and it is old enough (early 90s) that I think it may be single stage. Thanks for any and all help!

Definitely more white than the Ult. Compound is.

Not that it really matters of course.

Factory white paint on an early '90s MR2 is most likely single stage. Even though UC is close to the paint color you should still be able to see that you're pulling paint on the first go. You should get a more even distribution of white on the face of the pad due to paint transfer than what you would get with just UC alone on the pad. If you have a paint cleaner that's a color other than white (ColorX, M80/M83, etc) you could try that as well.

But really, whether it's single stage or base/clear, if it has swirls you're still going to use basically the same process to correct it. Of course, single stage white tends to be extremely hard so fingers crossed this actually has a clear coat (but we doubt it).

so attack it with UC/UP like I would a clear coated car?

          Pretty much.

#7, #80 can be nice for single stage paints, but not required.

Yes. Just keep in mind that if it is indeed single stage white, it could be extremely hard and defect remove could be a bit challenging.
