  • Catch a Nail = Beyond Hope?

    Question for the forum:

One of my coworkers is a professional detailer, who works on classic cars at the Barrett-Jackson Auction in Scottsdale AZ, and Hot August Nights in Reno, among other places.

I asked him about my scuff from the rock which skipped down the driver's side door, and he said, "Well, if you can catch your nail in the scratch, it's not repairable; all you can do is make it less visible."

Is that right? I haven't tried his test, because I wanted to hear from this group first to get their take on his statement.

    Thanks.

He's right but I think you can greatly improve the appearance with a compound.

We can go out for a drive without her makeup and she looks fine. If I want to take the black one out, it is three or four hours in the "bathroom" to get ready.

Thanks for the comments. I learned that I didn't catch a nail on the scuff, so I can correct with the items we've discussed.

Will stay with yellow foam pads instead of cutting pads though.

Great place to solve problems. Appreciate the input!

If you break your nail going over it then it's guaranteed you can't fix it.....

On a serious note, you said this,

Cutting pads? What are you using as cutting pads?

Thanks for the call out-I was using the wrong terminology. I haven't invested in pads yet, waiting for the weather to clear and become consistently warmer. Looking like it will finally break to spring next week.

I believe it was either Guz or Davey g-force (or Michael Stoops) who suggested I go with MF yellow pads as a less aggressive step before moving up to cutting pads, with UC as the chemical.

My vehicle is only a few months old, despite the mileage (11,600 today), so a more aggressive correction regimen most likely won't be necessary.

Don't want to create unnecessary additional work for myself.

              Hope that helps clarify.

                Bill,

Perhaps you misunderstood. If I recall correctly, we would have suggested to go with UC on a yellow foam pad as a test spot. If that doesn't give you enough correction, then move up to a test spot with a MF cutting pad.

Then for finishing, you'll need a less aggressive combo such as M205 on a yellow or black foam pad. (There are loads of other combos that would probably work too.)

Then wax / sealant of course...
