  • waxing brand new 2014 Nissan Murano with ResistAll coating

    Hi All

Just bought a 2014 Nissan Murano SL in super black color, the dealer by default gave me a resistAll coating for free w/o asking.

now i want to put some wax protection on it. I have been doing some research but have not lead to any concrete products to use.

I have narrowed it down to

    1. using Meguiars Gold Class Carnuba wax - thought of using this as some one told me that we should only use silicone free products which are body shop safe(no idea why though) but the problem is here in AZ i really cant protect from not being in direct sun.

    2. Meguiars ultimate liquid wax - its says it can be applied in direct sun, but it doesnt say body shop safe or safe to use on resistall.

Please help out, also let me know is it useful to do the waxing ? many of my friends say i shouldnt wax the new car at all atleast for an year.

    I am totally confused.

    First off, welcome to MOL!

Second, bummer that the dealer applied anything to your new car without asking you first, but at least they didn't charge you anything for it.

As for the silicone free, body shop safe products..... unless you are actually in an environment where fresh paint is being applied, silicone is a non issue. Any product with silicone it in will not negatively effect the coating in the slightest. Besides, you will be incredibly hard pressed to find ANY wax without at least some silicone in it. Yes, they do exist, but they are very rare indeed.

For your situation, we would recommend using Ultimate Wax since it's A)our longest lasting, best protecting wax, and B) you can apply it in direct sunlight on a warm surface. But that part about "a warm surface" is critical. Black paint can get searing hot in the Phoenix sunshine, so do yourself a huge favor and wait until early evening when the surface temp of the car has cooled a bit. A good rule of thumb is that if you can comfortably hold your bare hand on the paint surface then it's OK to work on. Now, that doesn't mean you should try and be a tough guy and show all your friends how much heat you can sustain!! Just use a bit of common sense and you'll be fine. We have applied Ultimate Wax on paint that measure 150F (noticeably hot) and it worked fine. We would still avoid that as much as possible, but at least it's good to know you can get away with it in a pinch. It will probably help if you apply UW to just a panel at a time and wipe off right away when working under borderline conditions though.

There are a lot of new semi permanent coatings showing up in this industry lately, but it is a very mature industry in Asia. There are probably close to 100 different coatings on the market in Japan, and more and more keep showing up in North America under various names. These tend to replace the need for waxing as they serve the same purpose, just with far greater durability. Some of them are only available to professional, company trained detailer/installers and these are usually offered with set pricing above and beyond a full paint correction detail. It's not uncommon to pay upwards of $500 or more just for the coating, and that's after paying that much or more for the full detail first. It's actually kind of silly to apply such a coating without doing a full paint correction first since all you'd be doing is locking in any existing defects. From everything we know, the product that was applied to your vehicle is definitely NOT one of these new breed of "glass coating" or "ceramic coating" products on the market. That doesn't mean it's a bad product, but don't expect it to stick around very long. One decent pass with a good quality cleaner wax applied with a DA buffer will take it off. Be glad you didn't get charged for it and just take car of the new car the way you want to from here on.

BTW, your friend is wrong. You can wax a brand new car as soon as you get it home, providing they didn't JUST paint it that day.

Thanks Mike, so no issues in using Ultimate was on resistall coated surface right ?
Then I will get some from walmart and start doping it this weekend in the early morning or evening.

            Hi,

I got and did the ultimate wax on all the painted metal parts

Can I also use the wax on painted plastic, like front rear bumpers, wing mirrors ?

also do i need to follow up immediately with the ultimate quick detailer or does that go in later like a couple of weeks.

            please let me know

            Thanks

Ultimate liquid wax will not stain trim. You can follow up with UQD if you get streaking which can occur with UW. Another option is to use ultimate quik wax on trim. Ultimate Black would be the preferred product to use on plastic trim. Works really well and is not that expensive. My local o'reilly auto parts store has it on sale for $8. Ultimate Black works best with clean plastic trim so some all purpose cleaner (D101) or M39 works well in that regard. Then apply the trim dressing.

If it's painted then use the Ultimate wax on it. You can use the UQD whenever you want as long as the car is only DUSTY.

                  Hi All

Thanks for the replies, I applied UW on the whole car and it looks fabulous. i was amazed to see the mirror like finish so deep and rich

now i have some questions on maintaining, I got both the UQD and the UQW, please let me know the maintainence regimen. sadly we had a small dust storm here in PHX yesterday and my car got a thin layer of dust on it.

So for that should I wash it or use the UQD also what should be the reapply for the UQW and also how long will my UW coating last (4 months or 6 months)

                  Thanks

This is a good read on maintenance.

UW should last somewhere between 4-6 months. A good rule of thumb is when the detailer is starting to get grabby it's time to reapply UW.

To add just a little to what The Guz said: When it starts to get grabby when you wipe a towel across the paint during washing, drying or using Ultimate Quik Detailer, then it's time to rewax.

                        Hi All

I landed up with a problem, since the dust storm happened, I landed up having a lot of dirt on my car, i tried using UQD but based on a patch test figured its causing scratches. the i got the car cleaned at a car wash. but looks like i have now scratches on the clear coat specially on the hood .

                        1. I am confused what am I doing wrong ? should we not use automatic car wash for new car ?

                        2. also do i need to reapply UW on the whole car ?

                        3. What should be the frequency for car wash ?

I would not recommend to use UQD if there is a thick layer of dust on the car. That can cause scratches. You are better off using a waterless/rinseless wash like ultimate wash & wax anywhere for that. Or if you want a bulk version then D115 would be the equivalent.

                          To answer your questions

                          1. Is this an automatic car wash with the brushes? If it is then those brushes cause scratches. Same goes for a coin op with a brush. Don't use it. The only fix is a polish and if they are deep a compound. If you go to a car wash then look for a touchless.

                          2. UW is still on the car. Another coat will not fix those scratches. A polish is the only fix. If you want a temporary fix then you could use M7 and seal that in with something like M26 or Gold Class. Once M7 washes off the scratches will be noticeable again.

                          3. Depending on the environment you could go weekly or bi-weekly.

I recommend you invest in 2 buckets and grit guards to do a proper 2 bucket wash to avoid scratches and swirls. See the video below.

How to properly use ultimate wash & wax anywhere

I already posted the maintenance video on the first page.
