  • Meguiars Ultimate Wax-Smearing?

Hello everyone! Its definitely been awhile since Ive been around here, certainly many changes it seems.

Anyway, Im still an avid detailer and still buy most of the new meguiars products every year! Favorite lately has been non acid wheel cleaner. Its nice to be able to buy a gallon of concentrate and dilute it. Recently discovered last touch detailer also, its a pretty awesome product.

My go to wax has been ultimate wax for quite some time now. Not sure if it may have something to do with it or not, but Ive had the same bottle for around 3 years now. I always apply it very thin, so typically a bottle of wax lasts me a good while. Lately its begun smearing something fierce. Used it today and even after quick detailing it was still smearing. It was a nice 60f degree cloudy day with low humidity. I always do the 'smear test' with my finger to insure that its hazed over, but it had been around 25-30min since I applied the wax. When I started removing the wax, it was as if the haze was removed which left a layer of oil. QD'ing the paint then left a nasty smear which looked worse.

Anyone have any ideas? Does the wax separate after several years? Yes, I shake the bottle thoroughly.

My brother has the exact same issues with NXT 2.0. Ive given him several old bottles of NXT 2.0 since Ive started using the ultimate wax.

New way of applying ULW is apply, and remove 2-3 minutes later. This should handle the smearing.

Exactly this. Ultimate wax doesn't haze like a typical wax.

Ultimate Liquid Wax can indeed be used either way, but there are situations where your type of experience comes up. If that's the case, you will almost always get a better result with the product if you apply it to a panel and wipe off right away, rather than applying to the entire vehicle. This issue is most noticeable on darker colored vehicles, but any such smearing/streaking is usually eliminated with a quick QD wipedown after application. That this method is not resolving your issue is, we're sure, a bit annoying to you. Have you tried using a mist of plain water rather than QD on your secondary wipe towel? If not, that may well solve the issue. If all else fails, give a call to our Customer Care Center at 800.347.5700 and ask for a replacement. If the product from the same bottle has been pretty straightforward to use in the past, as you allude to, but it no longer is, then something could possibly have changed.

Hmm, my Ult Paste seems to 'set up' like a typical old school wax. I've noticed a few smears on the hood of my car when removing it, but a few extra wipes and the smearing seems to go away on its own.

The paste version of UW does behave a bit differently than does the liquid version, and this is simply due to the ingredients that make it a paste. You'll find many MOL members who swear by UW paste for it's extreme ease of use and the incredible depth and wetness it imparts, plus the way it seems to really make metallics pop. Great stuff!

The Ultimate Paste is what I always finish with. It is very durable along with all the other attributes Mr. Stoops mentioned.

Me too. UPW is the cats meow no matter what color you use it on.

Mike, no, I did not try using plain water. Ill start by doing one panel at a time and go from there.

Kinda goes against everything Ive learned.

Maybe a really stupid question but I will give it a go. I got the dual polisher. Naturally all the "how to video's" demos with Ultimate wax in liquid form. Given the feedback from all of you that the Ultimate wax in paste form have got better results. Can I apply this paste wax with an applicator on the car and then use the dual polisher to spread it out ?

                      Many thanks for your advice.

You would be better off using a butter knife or something similar to THINLY apply the UPW to the buffer pad. All you have to do is scrape a small amount of wax out of the can and then spread it on the pad like you would butter a piece of bread.

For even better control i would recommend to use a brush similar to this and you will not waste by controlling EXACTLY how much goes onto the pad and also taking evenly from the tin.
