  • Removing Paint Scuffs: Ultimate Compound or ScratchX 2.0 or anything better?

I'm a new detailer. Unfortunately, someone left scuff marks/ paint exchanged on my brand new car in a parking lot. No note was left, and it just wasn't worth handling this through my insurance. I bought a cheapo scratch remover that removed most of the paint exchange, but it didn't work too well and left some hazing. I started doing some research and I became interested in detailing my car myself. I decided to invest in Meguiar's products.

I did plenty of research and I bought the following:
    Meguiar's Clay Kit
Meguiar's Ultimate Polish (based on what I read, use UP after UC or ScratchX?)
Meguiar's Foam Applicator Pads (I will be working by hand)

I plan on washing + claying my car prior to repairing my paint scuffs.

Please see the pictures below. Basically, I've read that ultimate compound is very aggressive, so I looked into ScratchX 2.0, SwirlX, and M205, but I'm confused because I don't know which one I should be getting. I looked at the aggressiveness posted somewhere in this forums but, as a beginner, it doesn't really tell me anything as to which aggressiveness I need. Can anyone give me any insight on what I should get to repair my scratch?

    Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

Unfortunately, you won't know exactly which product will work until you try. There are lots of variables, including your paint type, severity of the defects etc etc.

Just by looking at your pics and knowing you're working by hand, I wouldn't hesitate to use UC on those. Follow up with UP, then you favourite wax or sealant (UW in my case).

Are you planning on doing the whole car, or just the scratches?

We can go out for a drive without her makeup and she looks fine. If I want to take the black one out, it is three or four hours in the "bathroom" to get ready.

Meguiars says start with the least aggressive compound... should I get ScratchX 2.0 or UC?

Well, depends how many times you're willing to try / buy a new product.

ScratchX is less aggressive than UC, but if you buy that, there's a chance it may not be strong enough to remove the scratches. So then, you'll have to go and try UC.

There's a much better chance UC will work, just by looking at you pics.

Be sure to read up on the correct way to apply a compound by hand.

The reason why I asked if you were going to do the whole car is that it appears you have swirls all over the paint. If you do just the scratches, that area will look much better than the rest of the car and will be noticable. Just sayin'

I agree with Davey, go straight for the UC to try and remove those scratches. While you may have read UC is aggresive, it's mainly reffering to the fact that it can remove most minor defects with relative ease. But the great part about it is that in most cases it also leaves behind a great finish. I wouldn't hesitate to try UC if I were you. Follow it up with the Ultimate Polish.

1 other thing, as Davey mentioned you're going to want to finish up your process with a wax/sealant. Unless you've already got your choice on hand it'd be wise to pick up a bottle of Ultimate Liquid Wax. I know it's a bit more costly than the UC & UP, but if you don't protect the smooth surface you'll have after clay, compound and polish, you could quikly find yourself needing to clay again, long before you would've needed to if you had protected your paint with the wax.

At the very least, get some Ultimate Quik wax. If you choose the quik wax just make sure to apply immedietly after every wash. Good luck!

Nothing much left to say other than I agree with these two. Ultimate compound is much more versatile than scratch x and I would recommend you pick that up along with ultimate polish and ultimate wax. You can pick up NXT, which is still a good sealant if you want to save a few dollars. I would not hesitate to use UC and not just on the scratches but the entire car. Looking at your photos, your car could use some TLC to de-swirl it and bring back that nice looking paint underneath.

Seeing as you are local, you may want to attend one of the Thursday night garage's.

Awesome. Thanks guys. I actually ended up buying UC, along with UP and Ultimate Wax. I'll be spending a weekend detailing my car.

It's unfortunate that my car is only a few months old, and I got about 4 scratches/ scuffs/ door dings as a result of inconsiderate people. Since paint damage is somewhat inevitable, I figured it's worthwhile to learn how to detail my car.

Great, let us know how you go. If you've decided to do the whole car, get ready because it's a lot of work by hand. Consider investing in a DA, or doing the car slowly - one or two panels at a time.

Don't forget to work in the shade/on a cool surface. If you're going to have Saturday off to do this, it's great to get an early start [6am.] and do a quik wash, then proceed to claybar.

Some people even like to leave the car wet after that wash and spritz a bit of Quik Detailer [which comes with the claybar kit] and get right into claying. That method works well, just make sure you don't let any of that water dry on its own and risk leaving watermarks. If it's your 1st time claying you could maybe dry the back end of the car and leave the hood & fenders wet and just spritz some Quik Detailer on and get your clay on.

I had the same thing happen to me. I bought my dream car, a Mustang GT, finally after almost 20 years of wanting one. I drove my car out to a law enforcement driving track I was helping supervise and while out on the course, I happened to look back at my car and saw white paint transfer on my passenger front fender.

This was before I knew anything real about detailing. I used quick detail and a quick spray and wax to remove it (with a huge sigh of relief!). I've since clayed and polished the car and there is no sign that there has ever been contact with another vehicle. If I ever found out who did it, I'd have some choice words for them!

The plan of wash, clay, UC, UP, and then wax is what I'd do!
