  • Ultimate Black Restorer soaking up

So today I decided to try out my UB restorer on my wheel wells. I pulled the tires and cleaned the wells 4 rounds. The first 2 I used d143 and the second 2 rounds I used tuf shine cleaner. So it should've been pretty clean. I then used the aresol and sprayed the wells. The plastic soaked it up almost immediately. I ended up using about 1/3 of the can. Is this normal? It still looks a little splotchey. I'm going to pull the tire again to polish the rim so should I do another coat?

The plastic could be really dry and is soaking up anything you are putting on it. You have to ask yourself if the cost is worth it.

Something like solution finish may be a better option or even the liquid version of ultimate black.

On wheel wells I prefer to use Hyper dressing.

I used up a whole can on my dad's Tacoma. Considering how long it lasts, $10 to coat all the exterior plastic was no problem for me. I even did the grill and windshield cowl. I taped up all areas extensively.

I used a whole nother can for the truckbed and had great results. Totally worth $10.

I didn't use it inside the whell wells however. Like Das Burninator, I preffer to use Hyper Dressing in there.

I like how the wells came out. I still have to fix the one but I liked how it came out. At $10 a can I think it's worth it. If it last a long time I'll be really happy. A couple months would be great. I'll see how the other wells come out. Hopefully once it soaks up it'll stay looking decent

IMO the ultimate black is is a waste on wheel wells. They take too much of a beating to use something high cost like ultimate black spray.

I also like stuff like Hyper Dressing because it is silicon based and coats suspension, etc. Keeps thing from rusting as much in the winter months.

I agree with you on the wheel wells. I would much rather use ultimate black on exterior trim. The aerosol version is great on grilles. As you stated they take a beating and personally I can't justify using ultimate black in the wheel wells. It's fine to experiment. I'm curious to hear how long it lasts myself.

What's winter . Seeing as the op is in So Cal just like I am, rust is not a problem.

Winter is the time of year that I work from home and leave the cars parked...

In So Cal we have 2 seasons. Hot and Hotter!

The he reason I went with the UB Spray was because I don't have a lot of time to clean my car. Full time work. Full time school. And full time softball coach with 2 teams. I have put regular UB on the wells before (as I don't have other dressings) it usually lasted about a month before the looked nasty again.

Im OK with experimenting with this. I'll try to take pictures and keep with some updates.

I agree with The Guz and DasBurninator about the wheel wells.. While UB may keep them black, they'll still end up getting dirty. Hyper Dressing's super easy to apply just after having washed the wheel wells. But UB still not a bad idea, considering they'll be just as black after a quik wash. Let us know how it holds up for you.

I thought Hyper Dressing was water based?

I mostly see it as a cost factor more than how long it lasts. Hyper Dressing is cheap. I have almost 3/4 of a gallon still and use it every wash. Figure that wheel wells have to get dressed more often than anything else on the car...

It contains silicon. At least in an amount that it is not bodyshop safe. So I would assume it is silicon based.

Same here. I mainly use it on tires & wheel wells, and even diluted 1:1 the gallon seems to last me quite a while.
