  • Which wax product for a brand new vehicle ?

    We just bought a new Subaru Forester in the medium blue color. I want to get a coat of wax or similar product on it before the harsh Michigan winter sets in. What would work best? I do not need a show car shine. A reasonable shine with the best protection to last through the winter is what I would prefer. Cleaning, swirl removal, etc. is not an issue at the moment.

    I use Meguiars numbered and Flagship marine products on my boat, and have used Meguiars Gold Class liquid carnauba and also wash on other vehicles.

    Is there something better to protect paint on a brand new vehicle than carnauba?

    This vehicle is garage kept, but regularly covered in salt, and ran through touchless car wash systems on days above freezing. There are no viable alternatives to that method of wash.

    Welcome to Meguiar's Online. Meguiar's full synthetic waxes like our NXT Tech Wax 2.0, Ultimate Wax, & Paint Protect are going to be longer lasting than our carnauba based waxes and would be better choices especially in a harsh winter environment. All three are great products, all three are very popular, and all three have their own characteristics which make them unique and preferred. Meguiar's Paint Protect is our most durable option at this time.

    Which ever wax you chose, it will be a great idea to try to use a spray wax like Meguiar's Ultimate Quik Wax, usually after your regular washing. The use of a spray wax like Meguiar's Ultimate Quik Wax will significantly extend the life of your original wax coating, regardless of which wax you use.

    Another technique to consider for harsh winter environments are Rinseless & Waterless wash methods. These alternative techniques have become especially popular among users in harsh winter environments mainly because they can be performed inside of a garage.

      Agreed with Nick, but just to elaborate:

      - Ultimate Quik Wax (UQW) is hardly any more effort (and adds hardly any time) when used whilst drying the car after a wash and will 'top up' your existing wax / sealant protection;

      - With regard to Rinseless washes, Meguiars D115 also contains wax, so it too will top up / boost your existing wax protection;

      - With regard to Waterless washes, Meguiars UWWA (Ultimate Wash & Wax Anywhere) also contains wax, so it too will top up / boost your existing wax protection.

We can go out for a drive without her makeup and she looks fine. If I want to take the black one out, it is three or four hours in the "bathroom" to get ready.

        I'm a big fan of D114 and finished off with a little D156 to protect the wax on my cars (wax varies depending on which car).

          I don't think waterless will work in the winter. The salt crusts so thick and quickly that it would really scratch the paint.

            Which is why those that use it in the winter will blast the initial crud off the paint and then use a rinseless/waterless wash.

              I would go with Megs Ultimate Paste wax on the paint and wheels, do 2 coats to ensure coverage and protection or Paint Protect 365 (just make sure you read up on how to apply and remove 365). I would also clay before applying to assist with bonding and longevity. BTW , in general Subies have very soft paint, so be careful and use high quality applicators and MF towels.

                Fellow Michigan resident! Cool!

                I'm in Rochester Hills. If you're near by, you can have the remaining tin of Ultimate Paste Wax. I just prefer the liquid..

                NXT 2.0 made it through a Michigan winter just fine. I wouldn't hesitate to use it again.

                I have a trigger bottle of rinseless wash dilution to pre spray parts of the vehicle down, before washing. This will be my first winter operating, as my better half has a garage in her new condo. I'm interested to see if this will work or not...
