  • Best Meguiars product to remove swirls in new black paint.

    Hey everyone, back again!
Quick question, what the best meguiars product to use to remove any swirl marks?
I'm painting a jet black truck this week and am afraid I'll have swirl marks left behind and be very noticeable after the cut and polish, especially on such a dark color!
So whats best to remove these with a finishing foam pad?
    Or are they preventable?!

    Thanks in advance.

Your best bet is probably M205, but you'll need to confirm with a test spot first.

We can go out for a drive without her makeup and she looks fine. If I want to take the black one out, it is three or four hours in the "bathroom" to get ready.

Well what products do you have?

I agree with a test spot. You may need a polishing pad if you need to remove swirls.

Thanks for the reply Davey G-Force and The Guz! Both of your cars in your avatar's look sweet by the way!

Well I have UP and UC and m105/205. I will be using the m105/205 on this truck.

Davey, I was afraid the m205 would leave the swirl marks but maybe it won't, fingers crossed.

The Guz I'm going to use wool pad or cutting foam pad for the m105 then was gonna use a foam polish pad followed by a foam finish pad if needed.
But seems like you guys are saying a polish pad with m205 might not leave any swirls at all am I correct? That would be great not to have swirls!

I might have to get a DA polisher as I saw rotaries are the reason for swirls. Or will my RO buffer work?

I will do a test spot once I get it sanded and start polishing, but just incase it leaves swirls, I want to be prepared on what to have ready and what to do.
Thanks in advance for any replies.

If you are trying to prevent rotary buffer trails, I'd suggest a DA to take the guess work away.

Polishing with a rotary to the point where there is only perfect paint left behind is very very difficult. With the right finishing pad and a fine polish you will be able to, but it takes practice and a DA will do it easier with more forgiveness.

M205 will work fine on a DA, but you still make see some holograms with a rotary. UP might be a bit better, but you will really need something finer. If the paint is soft and finicky it may not even be possible with a rotary at all.

So I should use the m205 on a DA followed by UP on the DA?
What finer product could i use?
I plan to cut and polish it after the paint has sat for a few days-1 week.

M205 on a DA would be all you need.

                Agreed.

I doubt you would need a finer product if you are using a DA to finish out with.

Is a 6in DA a good size to buy for cutting compound and polishing compound?

5 inch pads on a DA is the way to go in my opinion.

Using a Dual Action Polisher like Meguiar's MT300 for finish polishing fresh paint especially for a dark color is popular right now and what a lot of our Pro Reps train out in the field. Like others have said it is difficult to finish completely defect free with a rotary, because of the action of the rotary machine itself, not the polish being used.

It should also be noted that a even though a rotary foam cutting pad does not cut as much as wool, rotary foam cutting pads create more heat than wool cutting pads. Any Rotary Foam Cutting Pad holograms left behind from the rotary machine are also harder to remove in most cases than those inflicted from a wool pad.

Here is a good writeup that Mike Philips did regarding polishing with a rotary. Stumbled across it a few days ago, and it really shows how damn near impossible it is to get a perfect finish with a rotary. Even from a seasoned pro.
Hologram Free with a Rotary Buffer Over and over the topic of buffing out a car hologram-free, that is without leaving any swirls induced by the rotar

To this day I still can't quite get it perfect even with a jeweling pad and SF4500. Pull out one of my DA machines? It's perfect in no time.

Thanks The Guz! reason i asked is because the rotary I bought came with 6" pad, I wonder if I can replace it with a 5" pad...?

Nick, thanks for the reply and great info on the wool vs foam pad. Now I am not sure what pads to use with the rotary on future jobs.
I guess if the paint is fresh go with a foam pad for less cutting and if its cured for a bit longer I'll go with the wool pad?

Dasburninator, thanks ro the reply and the link! great video and amazing the difference a rotary and DA have.
Whats your jeweling pad used for, finish or polish?
