  • Great way to exercise !

So yesterday, I had to put a relative's mini-van in storage for a couple of months, so i decided to give it a good detail before doing so.

Albeit a minivan is somewhat larger of a vehicle than many other cars... Anyway I thought why not monitor my heart rate and measure the amount of calories burned during the detail. I put on a Polar HR strap on, sync'd to my Apple Watch and set about detailing. I live in SW Florida, so it is hotter than norm, temp was around 85 with high humidity. I worked in the shade for the most part. I'm 175lb 44yr old male.

Vac'd the car, and wiped down the interior using D149 Quick Interior Cleaner
I used D114, for the initial waterless clean.
Then clay barred the car, using the regular white Megs Clay and some D155 last touch 1:1 for the lubrication.
Then cleaned the wheels and tires (which were filthy) using D115 @ 8.1 for the wheels, and D170 Hyper Dressing @ 3:1 for the tires. Also did the front wheel arches with D170, while i was down there.
Then i waxed the car using Collnite 845 (sorry Megs, its my fav !! despite having ULW, among other waxes)

Finally did all the windows using D120.

Finally used on the windshield a bit of Rain-X.

Total time taken was 2 1/2 hrs Avg HR was 145. I'd burned over 2000 calories. This is ACTIVE calories, not total calories. Which my base is around 1850 a day. I probably guzzled down about 3 pints of ice water during the detail, and my t-shirt was pretty soaked.

For someone who exercises regularly quite vigorously. I was very happy with this number. That would be equiv to a cycle on a road bike averaging 17mph for over two hrs (slow for some) but most definitely hard work for others who aren't regular cyclists. Or two hrs at the gym on a machine such as an eliptical, rower or cycling machine (not running, as that takes more energy !)

Anyway, i know what i'd rather do... Spend two hrs down the gym on a stupid machine. OR detail a car and something to show for it at the end !!! If you're looking to loose weight. Then just detail yours and your family members cars every weeked and before you know it, you'll of shed quite a few lbs !!!

Nice experiment! Detailing can definitely be a work out!
