  • MEGUIAR. It is time to stop locking the bottles.

This has to stop. Are they really that greedy that they won't allow their faithful customers to open the bottles if we choose to, have the option to dilute it with water? They'd probably make up an excuse as, it preserves the product better, it prevents spillage, especially when the products are being transferred to stores nationwide, etc.

The off the shelves products, are already a rip off to begin with. They are dumbed down versions of the Meguiar's undiluted professional line. You are mostly paying for the shiny package and the convenience of having it already diluted, so at least, gives us the option to open the bottle and dilute it further, if we desire to.

The Meguiar Hot Wheels Cleaner is probably one of Meguiar's best products. It works better than the competition (which don't lock their bottles btw), but it is also more expensive. Why not allow us to stretch our product with some water if we need to? Why lock the bottle so hard, that even with pliers is a pain in the butt to open them?

Meguiar is a big company who makes millions and millions. They don't need to do this. The only one who gets screwed is the little man who just wants to keep his one car looking fresh and clean.

I find them quite easy to remove with a big pair of pliers or vice grips. Couple of seconds and they are off.

It can be done, but that's not the point. They shouldn't have to resort to these tactics. Changing it to a simple twist off cap, won't decrease sales whatsoever, it may even boost sales, because they won't have to spend money on locking the products.

A pair of channel locks will get the trigger off easily.

Anyway if you are looking to save money the next best thing is to invest in the larger quantities of product available in the detailer line or mirror glaze line.

I noticed they were stiff to remove. Yet channel locks and off they come.
They are tight so they do not leak product if shipped and the box is turned sideways.
RPPM just shipped me some. He cleverly also taped around the neck and nozzle to add more protection from spilling in shipment.

You could also pick up a bottle and sprayer from a detail shop or big box home store for about $4.
Then open the product bottle and pour how much you want into the new bottle. You can dilute it with distilled water (not bottled mineral water). Put tape on the new bottle and label it.
Don't forget to keep all chemicals out of reach of children and pets.

It is also important that the caps be very tight for safety.
Many of us shake the bottle before using. It usually travels from below the belt to about the ears. If it were to leak when changing to the downward direction, that would be close to our eyes.

Many products come like that now, not just Meguiars, and not just auto detailing products. Not sure why it is done, safety or to prevent product dilution. Yes, it can be frustrating but like everything in life, there are workarounds.

Re: MEGUIAR. It is time to stop locking the bottles.

IMHO, I love the Detailer line and Meguiar's own spray bottles. I save lots of money by buying most of the products I use in bulk.
That said I've never found that I couldn't twist off the consumer spray bottle tops with a little extra effort.

These are the usual products I buy in gallon sizes:
                D101 All Purpose Cleaner
                D108 Super Degreaser
                D111 Shampoo Plus
                D114 Rinse Free Express Wash
                D120 Glass Cleaner Concentrate
                D149 Quik Interior Detailer
                D155 Last Touch Detailer Spray
                D156 Synthetic X-Press Spray Wax

If you shop wisely you can often find these product when there is free or low flat rate shipping charges.

                  I never had a problem.

Then again I have drummer hands...

It's definitely getting more common in the industry. I reuse any sprayer top I feel has a nice spray pattern. Just cut off the bottom 3/16" or so with a pair of tin snips and locking feature is permanently disabled. It's easier to fix than child-proof pill bottles.

We package our products for transportation, storage & usage reasons. As you can imagine there are many kinds of users of our products from consumers to professionals, so we must keep that in consideration. As mentioned by other members, if you are looking for larger volumes, we would recommend our Professional Detailer Line. Many of the products are concentrates which are designed to be diluted with water unlike our retail line which you are referencing.

While some of our consumer products may have DNA from our Professional Lines, they are definitely not "dumbed down" versions. We wanted to remind you again, please keep our Forum Rules in mind when posting, especially rule #3 &#4.

All our of Hot Rims Wheel Cleaners are formulated as RTU (ready to use) & by simply adding water will completely change the product performance. Again if you are looking for a larger volume wheel cleaners, we would suggest our Professional Detailer Line.
