Been sanding with 500 grit and it looks like there is some hard coating on them. Used up one disc already. Anybody else come across this?

HMMMMM - Appears to possibly be the UV Coating from the factory that you have removed 100% in some portions and not 100% other sections ?
If your goal is to remove completely, you will need to continue maybe even w/ 320 grit and then of course refine the sanding marks with several steps of finer grades of paper before polishing out and then coating.

I've had several over the years that responded this way. Not sure why, but I agree with Mike, it's likely an original UV layer from the factory. My efforts with 600 grit were futile in most cases, but after refining with the other levels (800, 1000, 3000) it wasn't near as noticeable as it is at this stage.John @ HillCityAutoDetail.com
