  • New car: scratches on leather dashboard

    Hi everyone,

I just received my new car and noticed that I have 2 big scratches on the leather dashboard. They don't seem to be deep and I can only notice them when the light is reflecting on the dashboard.

Since it's a new car (got it last Friday at the end of the day) I'm going to take it back to the dealership to see what they can offer me as a solution.

I'm posting this to understand if you guys think this is an easy leather fix that will be completely unnoticeable or if I need to ask them to change the whole dashboard. The second option kind of scares me because removing and assembling a new dashboard might leave some cockpit noise and I simply can't leave with that.

Here is the pic of the scratches: https://i.imgur.com/FhgrNGd.jpg

    Thanks for the help!

Tough situation, i do not know enough about leather repair to know that there is a easy solution that will be completely unnoticeable. I would imagine unlikely unfortunately.

I was really hoping for an easy fix since it looks like something so superficial. It’s like the leather is matte and along the scratch it just lost its matte coat but I have zero knowledge of leather repair.

Yeah, not sure it will disappear....

I'd just worry that the dealer will take some leather or dash product and rub it in a lot and make it worse... But if you try a Meguiars product, or other leather product, and do a little application yourself, could be hard to go back to the dealer.

So I took the car today to the dealership. He told me that if I want they can do the replacement of the whole dashboard but wouldn't recommend it considering it's a new car and the dashboard requires a lot of disassembly to come out.
For they time being no fix was done. They just applied some kind of dashboard care product and obviously, since it leaves a satin finish the scratches are now invisible since they are really superficial. The thing is, as soon as the product dries and disappears the scratches will be there again. I have to be honest, I'm not fond of removing a dashboard for a new one on a new car.

Is there any dressing/conditioner that can be applied to the dashboard that keeps that satin finish without having to constantly re-apply it? Note that the dashboard is not real leather. It's just an imitation. Probably vinyl.

          Thanks!

The Ult Quick Detailer leaves the least behind, but could be enough and quite matte.

Otherwise the Natural Shine would leave more coating, and without much shine.

They seem to last decently long for me, though mine is more on the definite plastic side.

Ok I can give a try with one of them and see the results.
By the way, this is the result with the product from the dealership. It did made the scratches invisible but as soon as it dries they will be visible again and I don't know how long this coverage will last:

If their stuff did that much, I think you'll be ok.

Just give whatever you choose a gentle wipe around to get everything filled in... and then if you need to do the rest of the car to match....

Ok, I know this is a Meguiars site, and I have both Meguiars Gold Class and new Ultimate Leather products. But in the leather world the deep dive guys seem to get into Leatherique or Colourlock. I think either may even have slight repair products??

You're suggesting other products for my specific problem? If so, which one?
I'm wondering from a fix standpoint what could be done. Wouldn't this be solved painting the dashboard considering it's already some fake leather that was painted already? There is no dent or anything. It's just a matter of missing a coat of matte coverage.

I'm not fully familiar with the entire lineup of the lines, but I would maybe contact Colourlock and Leatherique and discuss your leather and see what they offer. Like I said, on various forums they both have alot of very happy customers.
