  • Issue with swirls and scratches

    Hello all,

First time poster, LOVE meguiar's products but I'm having trouble reducing/eliminating swirls and fine scratches on my 2015 Corvette. See below:

I have followed the directions exactly from the Meguiar's Detailing 101 videos and can't seem to remove them at all.

    1. Washed car thoroughly
    2. clayed with quick detail
    3. evaluated paint and decided to start with Ultimate Compound based on the amount of swirls.
    4. applied with MT300 and Red cutting disc following instructions in video.

I prepped the pad and the small section (about 2x2') im working on. And slowly worked a hashtag pattern several times. After wiping the product off (with a meguiar's microfiber towel) I haven't noticed any difference in the amount of swirls.

Obviously without being able to watch, can you think of anything I might be doing wrong or might be missing? I'm being slow and methodical with the pad flat against the surface and using 4800-5000OPM after I prep the surface area. I can try to upload a video of me working a small area if that helps. Your products have always worked great for me so I'm assuming I'm not doing something right.

    Thanks for the help!

Welcome! Try a microfiber cutting disc. If that doesn’t help a heavier cutting compound might be needed. M110 perhaps.

      Hey OT,

ok thanks, I’ll give that a try starting with the UC and let you know how it goes.

      thanks again,

We do not like to generalize, but corvettes are known for having rock hard paint. It's perfectly common that Ultimate Compound on our red for cutting disc may not remove all defects.

        thanks again,

It sounds like you have good technique going,

@NAWinn It's tough to tell with images. Could that be micro flex cracks from the thin carbon fiber hood?

Are the marks only on that raised section which might have a small vibration up and down?

Not sure what happened looks like my above response got cut off. But yes, a video would help to ensure technique. The one thing you did not mention is pad rotation. You do not need a lot of fast pad rotation, but at least moderate.

It could be that the paint is very resilient & you will need a more aggressive set up, for example, our D300 D/A Microfiber Correction Compound on our DMC5 D/A Microfiber Cutting Disc. If you go this route, it is crucial to prime this disc properly before use. More info here:

I've always found Corvette clear coat to be quite hard. You may just need a little extra, as mentioned above. I'm typically using a Flex direct drive machine, a hybrid wool pad and Meg's #110.
