  • Detail Clay

Sometimes when I use my clay with detail spray I get streeks of clay left on the paint . This is even though a good layer of spray is put on paint. The clay is not brandnew but not very old. What am I doing wrong?

Which clay are you using? Quick Clay? It doesnt usualy happen with the Quick Clay, though if you are pressing to hard it might.

Are you making sure that you buff the surface really well after the claying process?? I would say try going over those areas again with just the detail spray and then wiping dry to see if that might get rid of the marks. Just check your work with decent lighting to make sure you have gotten all the surface clear and buffed after claying.

*Also, don't forget to constantly "work" the clay so that you don't continue to use the same dirty clay surface*

Perhaps, your paints finish is not smooth and oxidized somewhat. I would think that if this was the case, your fighting with your clay. If your finish is in good condition, it may be just as Murr stated above. Are you putting enough detailing spray on? And, are you doing the claying in the shade on a cool surface?

Even if you do get a smear, don't worry about it, just wipe off any residue with a microfiber... it happens during our Saturday classes as we have a lot of people claying usually with no or little experience.

Like I said though, if you do get a clay smear, don't worry about it just wipe it off with a microfiber...

from time to time I get a smear... like Mike P. said very easy to remove with a towel. The smears really show up on black.

              detail clay

              Thanks for the replies.

The smears happen on a very wet surface
on a vehicle that may not have had any previous detail work. The result is a heavy smear like the clay is dragging on the surface.

On an un-cared for surface, there will be a lot of drag and friction. The key is to clay until the friction and drag goes away.

Are you claying in direct sun light? or on a warm surface? This happens alot when the surface of the vehicle is really warm.
