I am very new here but I purchase one off of eBay as well. Very nice
unit, not to heavy. I will be using it for the first time this week. My
opinion is that you could use the edge pads. The reason it says
to "only use hook..." is because of the backing plate it comes
with. I replaced mine with a Meguiar's W64 rotary backing plate as
I wanted to use 6.5 inch pads.

      Hey RZ,
I have the 7428, that I also got off of Ebay about 2 years ago I think. I think after I paid S/H it was around 120.00 bucks. I like it a lot, as pcunite mentions, it's not too heavy, 8 lbs I think. It also has a 10 amp motor, 1000 - 3000 RPM's, bale handle and not sure how to describe this, but it ramps up to speed, so there's a clutch of some sort it seems, which is nice in case the dial accidently gets cranked up. The 7" hook and loop pad is pretty much similar to the Meguiars W-65 backing plate accept it does not have the little centering button on the pad and it's a 5/8" thread so you change it if you like. I give it a

We have 3 the 7428's that we are currently using at work... they get some serious use and abuse! Work very well and seem to hold up well considering the use they get, lots of nonstop use for long periods of time.

As Tom describes it 'ramps up' not sure if other polishers do this, if not its a great feature. We have used the included backing plate with Meguiars foam polishing pad and it seemed to work well.

Problems we have had..... We had one where the variable speed failed(supposedly a $90 part, not worth it) and now it only has high speed its handy if you need a grinder but other than that its around for parts. Another fell in a pool, after it ran for a little while till the bearings went out. A few new cords. So really its stuff we caused.

I bought a new one last spring to replace the one without variable speed and had a hard time finding one, I was told that they were discontinued. Part of the Dewalt/Porter Cable eliminating some duplicate products.

I've got one but have only just started playing with it. You can but this thing new, not refurbished, for $75 at tools-plus.com I was told about this deal shortly after spending a bit more for mine on ebay. Darn.

Yeah sorry about the delay on that news.

I just got mine in the mail yesterday and I put a Meguiar's Backing plate on it. I have not used it yet. I got mine at tool-plus and I paid $86 shipped to my door.

Don't sweat it buddy. And yes, I should point out that it was Shawn here who made this money saving discovery. After I bought elsewhere.

I noticed that. Is that normal for a rotory? Is it benificial? I noticed too that if you pull the trigger then let off and pull it again it takes a moment. I read the manual and did not see any thing about it.

                    Re: Porter Cable rotary

I think it ramps up to speed so you don't sling product everywhere. I think its a good thing because the machine has quite a bit of torque.

EDIT: WOW $75 is really really cheap! I paid over 200 for mine. Even if i got back to where I work with the employee discount it would cost me at least 2 times as much!

If any one is interested in this rotory this is where it can be found. I ordered mine from here and it came in a few days.

Yes it is normal for the rotary to have the slight delay you are talking about, all the Makita Rotarys we had did the exact same thing.
