  • Carpet cleaners/extractors

My wife is wanting to buy a carpet steamer for our home carpet. We have tried one of the carpet steamers from walmart/target but the quality is not very good. We are looking to get something of decent quality.

The budget is about $400, but if it make a large difference we can increase that some.

I'm interested in getting something dual purpose that we can use to clean our carpets, and then with an attachment also clean my vehicles. Something that works with MEGS APC/APC+ or similar would be a bonus because then I wouldn't have to stock extra cleaners.

Please let me know if any of you have some good recommendations. Thanks!

I am in the market for a similar item, but have not found anything below $500, and that was a "factory refurbished" one on ebay.

Rug Doctor has a $599 unit that comes with a 12 foot hose attachment. "Use to clean any tight space, upholstery, and car/RV/boat interiors."

Saw it on costco for $479. That is pretty close to budget if it works well. We have already gone through two cheap steamers.

Anyone have experience with this? (I did a search for Rug Doctor on MOL but did not get many hits)

I am looking for something smaller than the one you mentioned from Costco. Durrmaid and Select Spot both make models that have what I am looking for, but the price is a little steep for an occasional use item. ($600 USD)+

JohanD, I've used the Rug Doctor with upholstery attachment several times on several details. It works well for what it is. It is not a steamer. It has no on-board heater so the water won't be any hotter than what is coming out of your faucet. The suction is good and the carpets and upholstery dry fast.

From what I've seen on the market, $400 is kind of the inbetween price. You're too high for the big box stores but too low for a high quality cleaner. I've never found a unit in the $400 range that was worth buying. Again, too low for a quality machine. Just my opinion - don't shoot me for it. Good luck.

cnfowler, thank you for your comments.

The water from our faucet is probably about 130 degrees, but that is only if you start to vacuum right away.

What is the next price step up? $700? $800? The only thing is it has to be able to do carpets inside the house.

I understand the Rug Dr. is not a steamer. Having said that, I was always happy with the results. More importantly I should say , The wife was very happy with the results. If I could I would get the Rug Dr. plus the attachments.

This is not specifically a steamer but I have used this in a few cars and it made a hell of a difference.

One of my wedding gifts was a Bissle Little Green (machine) which does wonders everywhere. You add the hot water, use their solution, and if there is an oder issue I put some Odaban or Odeban which you can get at lowes/home depot.

I have researched and they do sell a specific automotive machine.

                Auto Care ProHeat for 109.00

Thank you for the link. I do not know if that is heavy duty enough to do a thousand square feet of carpet indoors, as well as the vehicles. I will need a dual purpose machine.

I was thinking about the Mytee lite II, and also get the carpet wand attachment.

I bought the 12 gallon Mytee back in March from Proper Auto Care on sale for $1295.00, great Machine but it did not come with a (shaft, pipe, wand) or whatever you want to call it, so I had to do our house carpets on my knees and it was hard on the back. I believe it is the same Machine as Mytee lite II only the Mytee lite II is 6 gallons and I believe I have seen them offered from $ 800- $ 1,000.

Johan, this would probably be the route I'd go given your situation. More than you wanted to spend, but probably the only one you'll ever have to buy. My father has owned several carpet cleaners purchased through local stores and has been happy. The only problem is he has purchased SEVERAL. Several machines at $200 a pop would equal the Mytee. And the Mytee is a far better cleaning machine than what he was buying.
