That looks like the work of a backing plate that's too big. If it comes right to the edge of the velcro material then it tends to cut in when pressure is applied. It should still be good for removal of wax when covered with the MF bonnet.
But looking in your gallery... Looks like you have the Meguiars backing plate. Make sure the backing plate is centered on the pad, you should see some white(Velcro of the pad) all the way around the pad once it is installed on you PC.
These pads were some of my older pads and were well worn. Recently I have been doing some major work and learning some valuable lessons.
I found that when using well worn 9006 pads for polishing at speed 5, If I fooled around and applied to much product then the pads were prone to this ripping. The pads were already somewhat soft and that in addition to the dampness from the mild overapplication of product tended to really soften up the pads. So I have gained a little bit of experience in cutting back on the amount of product and also cutting the speed back to 4.5 which also helped. When using a newer, firmer pad I tended to not see this issue.
Pads split like that usually from one or more of the following:
1. too much pressure being applied
2. Too large of backing plate
3. Using higher than speed 5 on the PC (Ie. Speed 6)
4. Using the pad/PC on sharp corners where the pad can not sit flat on the surface
5. A saturated pad that is then turned on to speed 6
Thanks. Sorry for late reply. ISP decided to do maintaunce last night . I have Megs backing plate. Could be too much pressure. Now I did lift the pad off the surface and it spun for a few seconds. Never have gone above 5 setting. Also noticed back of pad was very wet last time I used it. Could be using too much product and saturating the pad. Understand I am learning how much product and pressure to use, getting there!!
Do not lift a spinning pad with a PC as that can tear a pad apart; I've done it! I have a feeling that the saturated pad combined with lifting the pad is what tore the edge.
Reviving an old thread here but it relates to the question I have and did not want to start a new thread
The exact thing happened to my 8006 pad, I have the w64DA backing plate. I realized that the reason they tore was due to the fact that I was putting to much pressure on the pad. My question is, can I still use a pad that is torn like this effectively. Will it still provide the cut I need. Other than the tear in the back, the pad has minor wear. One pad is torn on the front. Thanks in advance.
