  • PC 54745 Polishing Pad What is that equivlent too?

    Hi all,
I was looking at Amazxx and they have a great price on the PC.

What is the PC 54745 Polishing Pad equivlent too in comparision to Meguiars pads? Can I use this pad for polishing and use another one for waxing? I was thinking in using the Tech Wax and the #80 Speed Glaze

    Thanks
    Frank

If it were me I would toss the pad that comes with the PC or use it for something other than paint and pick up some Meguiars pads. I think most on MOL will tell you the same thing.

To use Meguiars pads you will need to get a Dual-Action Polisher Backing Plate
    -Pads-
Meguiar's W-8006 Foam Polishing Pad is for applying paint cleaners, cleaner polishes and cleaner waxes
Meguiar's W-9006 foam finishing pad is for applying pure wax, cleaner wax and pure polishes.

Here is a great thread to help with pad/product combos: Product, Pad and Speed settings for the Porter Cable Dual Action Polisher

Most people either throw this pad away or keep it clean and dry to use it to remove wax by placing a microfiber bonnet over it.

Ok, I understand people throw it away but why...Is the foam too harsh or to soft? What is the detail diffrence.....

        Thanks so much.

Well consensus is that the type of foam used for this pad doesn't work well for application of any chemical. By keeping it clean and dry, you can use the cushion supplied by the foam for removing wax with a bonnet over it.

Remember, Porter Cable is not a polish manufacture, neither is Black & Decker, how would they know what makes for a good foam for applying chemicals?

Try it for yourself, perhaps use it with a cleaner/wax?

Aside from the issue of foam performance the factory 54745 pad is a screw-on pad. So to switch between it and anything else (or another one of the same) means using a wrench.

Practically all of the “good” pads in the world use a quick-change system like Velcro to make it fast and easy to swap them out.

              ok fair enough....
I understand to apply cleaner and polisher and wax, I need to use G100A.

I understand applying and working the area but what do you do when it dries? Do you use the G100A with a bonnet(What kind? microfiber or terry cloth etc,) to remove the dried polish or wax? OR do you use a terry towel or microfiber??

              Thanks

I’m not saying that it’s a bad idea to polish with a Porter-Cable branded machine. I’m only saying that if you do get one with PC’s factory pad I’d recommend that you unscrew the factory pad and toss it, then use high quality pads with a Velcro plate system like Meguiar’s.

When applying cleaners and pure polishes you shouldn’t let them dry. They do their job as you’re working them in. For pure polishes you just work them in and wipe them off immediately. For cleaners and cleaner/polishes with diminishing abrasives you work them to a light, but still wet, film and then wipe them off. Wiping these off is best done with a towel because the wet product will load up a bonnet too fast and wet through to the pad. I prefer microfiber but vary high quality cotton terrycloth works too.

You do let waxes dry. Since the residue is dry you can use bonnets, either microfiber or very high quality cotton terrycloth, to remove wax. If I’m working a large vehicle I definitely prefer bonnets. For a small vehicle it’s still easier/faster to use bonnets but doesn’t save as much time as for large ones.
