  • M205 proper usage question

For the M80 being applied w/ a DA, I've read that you need to work it in until the M80 turns clear in color (but making sure it never dries up).

Does the M205 require the same technique except the M205 will be worked into the paint relatively faster than the M80?

For a 20"x20" panel, what would be a rough estimate of time I should never exceed? 5 min?

    Thanks.

It is tough to determine a time to work with any product. Humidity, temperature, amount of product, new pad/old pad are all variables that will effect work time.

The best way to go about it would be to not use too much product to start with, and then simply keep an eye on it while your working. If the product begins to dry up, then simply reapply more product.

The overall goal is to work the finish until the desired results are achieved. This may be one application or several applications depending on the condition and/or your expectations.

      Mike,

Because M105 and 205 do not use diminishing abrasives, while you use the polish, the abrasives are cutting the clear at a fairly constant rate correct? (So long as there is lubrication of course) Where as for the 80 series of polishes, their abrasives are breaking down and the cut of the abrasives is decreasing as the as you use them until eventually the product has almost no cut, right?

So if this is correct, the old rule to work the polish until the abrasives break down is not correct with M105, 205 and other polishes which use the new abrasives?

So if someone asked, "How much cut does 205 have?" Would the correct answer be, "Depends on how long you use the product on the paint. The longer you use the product, the more cut you will get."? (Also what type of pad you use and now much pressure you use but that is true for all polishes, even those with diminishing abrasives).

        Re: M205 proper usage question

FWIW, I was playing around with the M205 a little this weekend, trying to see what kind of play time it had, different rpm's, things like that...

On the rotary and polishing pad, it definitely went clear after several passes. Using the finishing pad I did not see this happen in the same amount of time as I worked it with a polishing pad, had I worked it further it may have had the same result.

I was also curious as to any pros or cons with the amount of time M205 is worked, since it uses SMAT, and not the diminishing abrasives?

What speed setting on the G110 should I use for the M205?
