  • Thinking of buying a DA...couple of ???'s

Could use a little help making a decision. Bought a dark metallic red Jeep last year and felt the need to put a coat of "real" wax on it recently instead of relying on the local burshless car wash. Had never heard of Megs before but probably got hooked up with those products thru Amazon (good customer feedback and links). Bought a starter kit from them with primarily GC products and did a 5 step and find myself thoroughly hooked on this detailing stuff.

After watching several videos with the PC and the Megs DA and realizing that my "passion" for working these products in will never approximate what I can do by spending a couple hundred bucks on a machine, I'm trying to evaluate a purchase. Here's what constitutes the basis of my needs for such a machine:

    1. I need it for two cars. One is the Jeep I mention above with virtually no swirls and the finish is in pretty good shape. It is a daily driver and garaged at night. It gets California duster treatment every day, washed weekly, and I now HAND WASH Meg's GC wash, grit guard, etc. Intend to use Meg's consumer polish, NXT 2.0 and GC wax couple of times of year.
    2. Other car is a black, 2004 Jag X type with minor swirls but otherwise good paint. Intend to detail this car over the July 4 weekend. This is a daily driver and is left ungaraged.

I intend to correct/maintain these cars on a weekly basis with monthly sealant/wax application and periodic deep detail about every three months.

In looking at the market, I think I don't need the FLEX. While more power might be nice, for my applications I don't see the need (which means I'll probably be kicking myself a year from now...) Seems to be between the PC and the Megs G110.

There seems to be plusses and minuses for both, but I kind of think that the Megs DA makes the most sense. I think the PC has been adapted from a wood working product and in so doing it opened up the DA use for knuckleheads like me who know just enough to be dangerous and who don't want to burn their paint. I'm aware that a new, improved version of the standard PC is supposed to be out any day now but I don't know that the enhanced power is going to be that big a deal to my intended use.

The Megs unit seems like it was developed using a "clean sheet of paper" for its intended use (cars) and has the right mix of power and applications to allow me to get the job done as described above for the least amount of cost. In other words, the Megs seems like its just enough to get the job done that I need to do.

Would appreciate any thoughts any of you have. I intend to place an order next week.

    Thanks.

      SW, welcome to MOL!

Read this thread, it may answer some of your questions. I am shortly contemplating a DA purchase as well, and this thread answered some of my questions. Hope this somewhat helps! Good luck!

The G110 will have a little extra power over the PC 7424, which is nice to help keep the pad spinning.

I have the old G100, which is like the PC, and it certainly isnt hard to stop the pad spinning.

Havent heard much about the Porter Cable 7424XP? Maybe it is something new?

One quick question; have you ever used a DA or Rotary? I bought the G110 package from Rick at ADS and did two cars with it. I did a '02 Mustang and '05 Maxima. Both of them are daily drivers and had swirls, scratches and water etches. I routinely washed and waxed them but never a FULL detail. Once I started using the G110 I am hooked. It was powerful enough to remove the deficts and put an AWESOME shine on them. My opinion is that I am not going to go into business so the G110 is more than enough. I love it and know it will be several years before I even think about a FLEX. Here is a picture of the Mustang....

Hope this helped. Let me know if you have any other questions.

I'd reckon the G110 will suit your needs. You won't be kicking yourself a year later.

Your jeep(daily driver) doesn't have swirls at the moment, but will with time.

Once you get them done, get the pics up.I've not seen an E-Type in years(on the road that is).

This was my reply to another thread on the same comparative subject. Hope it helps

The PC was developed as a sander and later adapted to polishing. The G110 was developed from the design board to be an automotive polisher.

The G110 is advertised to have more correction power than a PC, although others might dispute this.

The G110 is sold with a loop and hook backing plate. I'm not sure if the PC has one included, or if you have to order it separately.

The PC is lighter than the G110 by a pound or two. This makes it more practical for getting into smaller areas with a 4" pad by holding the head of the device and/or if you have to use one hand.

The PC's right-angle handle is ergonomically optimal for polishing horizontal planes (hood, roof). The bale style handle of the G110 makes for more comfortable polishing of vertical surfaces (doors, bumper covers) IMO

The PC can accommodate smaller pads like the LC 4" CCS pads. I'm not sure if the smaller 3.5" backing plate can be used with a G110, but I can't see a reason why not. I'll find out next week when my order arrives from PAC. I ordered a 3.5" BP and 4" pads for my PC, but I'll try them on the G110 too!
